  • Jonah 3:5-9 : 5 The people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and dressed in sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least. 6 When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robe, covered himself in sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 Then he made a proclamation in Nineveh, by decree of the king and his nobles: “Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not graze or drink water. 8 But let both man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out to God with fervor. Let each turn from his evil ways and from the violence in their hands. 9 Who knows? God may turn and relent and withdraw His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.” 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He relented and did not bring upon them the disaster He had threatened.
  • Matt 11:20-24 : 20 Then He began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because they did not repent: 21 ‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.’ 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will be brought down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.

Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works.
