1 Og Elia, tisjbiten fra Gileads innbyggere, sa til Ahab: «Så sant Herren, Israels Gud, lever, han som jeg står for, det skal verken være dugg eller regn i disse årene utenom på mitt ord.»

Elijah, the Tishbite from the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in these years, except by my word."

2 Og Herrens ord kom til ham og sa:

And the word of the LORD came to him, saying,

3 «Gå bort herfra, vend mot øst og skjul deg ved bekken Kerit, som er øst for Jordan.

"Go from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan."

4 Du skal drikke av bekken, og jeg har befalt ravnene å sørge for deg der.»

"You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded ravens to provide for you there."

5 Han gikk og gjorde som Herren hadde sagt, og han bodde ved bekken Kerit, som er øst for Jordan.

So he went and did as the word of the LORD directed him. He went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan.

6 Ravnene kom og brakte ham brød og kjøtt om morgenen og brød og kjøtt om kvelden, og han drakk av bekken.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

7 Men etter en tid tørket bekken ut, fordi det ikke var regn i landet.

But after a while, the brook dried up because there was no rain in the land.

8 Da kom Herrens ord til ham:

Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying,

9 «Stå opp, gå til Sarepta som hører til Sidon, og bli der. Se, jeg har befalt en enke der å sørge for deg.»

"Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Look, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you."

10 Han sto opp og gikk til Sarepta. Da han kom til byporten, var det en enke der som samlet ved, og han ropte til henne og sa: «Hent litt vann til meg i en skål, så jeg kan drikke.»

So he arose and went to Zarephath. When he reached the city gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and said, "Please bring me a little water in a vessel so I may drink."

11 Da hun gikk for å hente det, ropte han etter henne og sa: «Ta også med et stykke brød til meg!»

As she was going to fetch it, he called to her and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand as well."

12 Hun svarte: «Så sant Herren din Gud lever, jeg har ikke noe brød, bare en håndfull mel i krukken og litt olje i kruset. Nå samler jeg noen vedpinner for å gå hjem og lage det til meg og min sønn, for vi skal spise det og deretter dø.»

But she replied, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked. I only have a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a couple of sticks to go and prepare it for myself and my son so we may eat it and then die."

13 Men Elia sa til henne: «Frykt ikke! Gå og gjør som du har sagt, men lag først en liten kake til meg og bring den ut til meg, og lag deretter til deg selv og din sønn.

Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid. Go and do as you have said, but first make a small cake for me from what you have and bring it to me. Then make some for yourself and your son."

14 For så sier Herren, Israels Gud: 'Krukken med mel skal ikke bli tom, og kruset med olje skal ikke mangle til den dag Herren sender regn på jorden.'»

For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not run out, and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'

15 Hun gikk og gjorde som Elia hadde sagt, og både hun, han og hennes hus spiste i mange dager.

She went and did according to what Elijah said, and she, Elijah, and her household ate for many days.

16 Krukken med mel ble ikke tom, og kruset med olje manglet ikke, i henhold til Herrens ord som han hadde talt gjennom Elia.

The jar of flour was not used up, and the jug of oil did not run dry, as the word of the LORD which He spoke through Elijah had declared.

17 Senere ble sønnen til kvinnen som eide huset syk. Han ble svært syk, så han til slutt ikke lenger hadde pust i ham.

After this, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick. His illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.

18 Da sa hun til Elia: «Hva har jeg med deg å gjøre, du Guds mann? Har du kommet til meg for å minne meg om min synd og for å drepe min sønn?»

She said to Elijah, "What have I to do with you, man of God? Have you come to bring my sin to remembrance and to kill my son?"

19 Han sa til henne: «Gi meg din sønn.» Han tok ham fra hennes armer, bar ham opp til loftet hvor han bodde, og la ham på sin egen seng.

Elijah said to her, "Give me your son." He took the boy from her arms, brought him up to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.

20 Han ropte til Herren og sa: «Herre, min Gud, har du også gjort dette mot denne enken jeg bor hos, ved å la hennes sønn dø?»

Then he cried out to the LORD and said, "O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy upon the widow I am staying with by causing her son to die?"

21 Deretter strakte han seg tre ganger ut over gutten og ropte til Herren: «Herre, min Gud, la barnets sjel komme tilbake i ham!»

Elijah stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, please let the boy’s life return to him."

22 Herren hørte Elias røst, og barnets sjel vendte tilbake til det, og han levde.

The LORD heard Elijah’s prayer, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.

23 Elia tok gutten, bar ham ned fra loftet inn i huset og ga ham til hans mor, og Elia sa: «Se, din sønn lever.»

Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, 'Look, your son is alive.'

24 Da sa kvinnen til Elia: «Nå vet jeg at du er en Guds mann, og at Herrens ord i din munn er sannhet.»

Then the woman said to Elijah, 'Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.'
