1 Da Samuel ble gammel, satte han sine sønner til dommere over Israel.

When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.

2 Hans førstefødte sønn het Joel, og hans andre sønn het Abia; de var dommere i Beer-Sheba.

The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second son was Abijah. They served as judges in Beersheba.

3 Men hans sønner fulgte ikke i hans spor, men vendte seg etter urett vinning, tok imot bestikkelser og fordreide retten.

However, his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside to dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.

4 Da samlet alle de eldste i Israel seg og kom til Samuel i Rama.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.

5 De sa til ham: "Se, du er gammel, og dine sønner vandrer ikke på dine veier. Gi oss derfor en konge til å dømme oss, som alle de andre folkene har."

They said to him, 'You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways. Now appoint a king to judge us, like all the other nations.'

6 Men Samuel syntes det var ondt da de sa: "Gi oss en konge til å dømme oss." Samuel bad til Herren.

But their request for a king displeased Samuel, and he prayed to the LORD.

7 Og Herren sa til Samuel: "Lytt til folket i alt de sier til deg, for det er ikke deg de har forkastet, men meg, fra å være konge over dem."

The LORD said to Samuel, 'Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you. It is not you they have rejected but they have rejected me as their king.

8 Som de har gjort fra den dagen jeg førte dem opp fra Egypt og til denne dag, idet de har forlatt meg og tjent andre guder, slik gjør de også mot deg.

Just as they have done to me from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day—forsaking me and serving other gods—so they are also doing to you.

9 Men nå skal du høre på deres røst. Bare advar dem alvorlig, og fortell dem rettighetene som en konge vil ha over dem."

Now then, listen to them, but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will demand.'

10 Samuel sa så alle Herrens ord til folket som krevde å få en konge av ham.

Samuel relayed all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.

11 Han sa: "Dette vil være rettighetene til kongen som skal herske over dere: Han vil ta sønnene deres og sette dem til å kjøre sine vogner og være ryttere, og de vil løpe foran vognene hans.

He said, 'This is what the king who will reign over you will demand: He will take your sons and assign them to his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.

12 Han vil sette dem til høvdinger over tusener og over femti, til å pløye hans åker og sanke hans innhøstning, og til å lage krigsutstyr og utstyr til vognene hans.

He will appoint them as commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties. Some will plow his fields, reap his harvest, and make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.

13 Han vil ta døtrene deres til å lage parfyme, til å lage mat og til å bake.

He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.

14 Han vil ta de beste av åkrene deres, vingårdene deres og olivenlundene deres og gi til tjenerne sine.

He will take the best of your fields, vineyards, and olive groves and give them to his officials.

15 Han vil ta tiende av såkornet og vingårdene deres og gi til hoffmennene og tjenerne sine.

He will take a tenth of your grain and vineyards and give it to his courtiers and servants.

16 Han vil ta tjenerne deres og tjenestepikene deres, de beste av de unge mennene deres og eslene deres til sitt arbeid.

He will take your male and female servants, your best young men, and your donkeys, and use them for his own work.

17 Han vil ta tiende av småfeen deres, og dere skal bli hans tjenere.

He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.

18 Dere skal rope til Herren på den dagen for den kongen dere har valgt, men Herren vil ikke svare dere den dagen."

On that day, you will cry out because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.

19 Men folket nektet å høre på Samuel og sa: "Nei, vi vil ha en konge over oss.

The people refused to listen to Samuel and said, 'No! We want a king to rule over us.'

20 Vi vil være som alle de andre folkene. Vår konge skal dømme oss, gå foran oss og føre våre kriger."

Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us, govern us, and fight our battles.

21 Samuel hørte alle folkets ord og gjentok dem for Herren.

Samuel listened to all the words of the people and repeated them to the LORD.

22 Herren sa til Samuel: "Lytt til dem og sett en konge over dem." Så sa Samuel til Israels menn: "Dra hver av dere til deres by."

The LORD said to Samuel, 'Listen to them and appoint a king for them.' Then Samuel said to the people of Israel, 'Each of you, return to your own town.'
