Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort,

4 som trøster oss i all vår trengsel, slik at vi kan trøste dem som er i all slags trengsel med den trøst vi selv får av Gud.

who comforts us in all our troubles so that we may be able to comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

5 For som Kristi lidelser flommer over oss, så flommer også vår trøst over ved Kristus.

For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

6 Er vi i trengsel, er det for deres trøst og frelse; er vi blitt trøstet, er det for at dere skal bli trøstet og styrket til å holde ut i de samme lidelser som vi også lider.

If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces patient endurance of the same sufferings we also endure.

7 Og vårt håp for dere er urokkelig, fordi vi vet at som dere har del i lidelsene, har dere også del i trøsten.

And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you share in our sufferings, you also share in our comfort.

8 For vi vil ikke at dere skal være uvitende, brødre, om vår trengsel som vi opplevde i Asia, hvordan vi ble så overmåtelig tynget utover vår egen kraft, at vi endog var i villrede om vårt liv.

For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of the trouble we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself.

9 Ja, vi hadde den dødsdom i oss selv, for at vi ikke skulle sette vår lit til oss selv, men til Gud, som oppreiser de døde.

Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened so that we would not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

10 Han som fridde oss fra en så stor en dødsfare og frier oss; og til ham har vi håpet om at han også vil fri oss i fremtiden,

He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and He will deliver us again. On Him we have set our hope that He will continue to deliver us,

11 mens dere også hjelper oss ved deres bønn, slik at takksigelse kan reises for oss fra mange munn etter det gode som ble gitt oss i svar på bønn.

as you join in helping us through your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

12 For dette er vår ros: Vår samvittighets vitnesbyrd om at vi har ført oss enkelt og oppriktig i verden, ikke med kjødelig visdom, men i Guds nåde, og særlig mot dere.

For this is our boast: The testimony of our conscience is that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity, not relying on worldly wisdom but on God's grace.

13 For vi skriver ikke annet til dere enn det dere leser eller forstår, og jeg håper dere vil fortsette å forstå til enden,

For we write nothing to you other than what you can read and understand, and I hope that you will fully understand,

14 slik som dere delvis har forstått oss, at vi er deres ros, akkurat som dere også er vår, på Herrens Jesu dag.

just as you have partially understood us, that we are your reason for pride, just as you are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.

15 Og i denne tillit ønsket jeg å komme til dere først, slik at dere kunne få en ny nåde,

With this confidence, I planned to visit you first so that you might benefit twice.

16 og gjennom dere reise til Makedonia, og igjen komme fra Makedonia til dere, og av dere bli ledsaget til Judea.

I planned to pass through your area on my way to Macedonia, and then come back to you from Macedonia, so you could assist me on my journey to Judea.

17 Når jeg derfor ønsket dette, handlet jeg da på en lettsindig måte? Eller hva jeg ønsker, ønsker jeg det etter kjødet, slik at Nei nei og Ja ja skulle være med meg?

So, when I was planning this, did I act with fickleness? Or do I make plans in a worldly way, saying yes and no at the same time?

18 Så trofast som Gud er, vårt ord til dere er ikke Ja og Nei.

But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes" and "No."

19 For Guds Sønn, Kristus Jesus, som ble forkynt blant dere ved oss, ved meg, Silvanus og Timoteus, var ikke Ja og Nei, men i ham var Ja.

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed among you by us—by me, Silvanus, and Timothy—was not "Yes" and "No," but in Him it has always been "Yes."

20 For så mange som Guds løfter er, i ham er de Ja; derfor taler vi også vårt amen ved ham, til Guds ære.

For as many promises as God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through Him, the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.

21 Men den som bekrefter oss med dere i Kristus og har salvet oss, er Gud,

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us,

22 som også satte sitt segl på oss og ga oss Åndens pant i våre hjerter.

sealed us, and placed the pledge of the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

23 Men jeg kaller Gud til vitne over min sjel, at jeg sparer dere når jeg ennå ikke kom til Korint.

I call God as my witness and stake my life on it: it was to spare you that I did not return to Corinth.

24 Ikke at vi hersker over deres tro, men vi er medarbeidere for deres glede; for ved troen står dere fast.

Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers for your joy, because it is by faith that you stand firm.
