1 Nå, Israel, hør på lovene og forskriftene som jeg lærer dere å holde, slik at dere kan leve og komme inn og ta i eie det landet som Herren, deres fedres Gud, gir dere.

Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and judgments that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live and enter to take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving to you.

2 Dere skal verken legge noe til det ordet som jeg befaler dere, eller trekke noe fra det; dere skal holde Herrens, deres Guds, bud, som jeg befaler dere.

Do not add to the command that I am giving you, and do not take away from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you.

3 Dere har sett hva Herren gjorde med Ba’al-Peor. Alle som fulgte Ba’al-Peor, utslettet Herren, din Gud, fra din midte.

Your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal Peor; for every man who followed Baal Peor, the LORD your God destroyed him from among you.

4 Men dere som holdt dere til Herren, deres Gud, er i live alle sammen i dag.

But all of you who held fast to the LORD your God are alive today.

5 Se, jeg har lært dere lover og forskrifter, slik Herren, min Gud, har befalt meg, for at dere skal gjøre etter dem i det landet dere drar inn i for å ta det i eie.

See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may act according to them in the land you are entering to possess.

6 Dere skal holde dem og gjøre etter dem, for det skal vise deres visdom og forstand blant de folkene som skal høre om alle disse lovene og si: «Sannelig, dette er et vist og forstandig folk, en stor nasjon.»

You must keep and do them, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the nations, who will hear about all these statutes and say, 'Indeed, this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'

7 For hvilket stort folk har en Gud som er så nær dem som Herren, vår Gud, er nær oss hver gang vi roper til ham?

For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?

8 Og hvilket stort folk har lover og forskrifter som er så rettferdige som hele denne loven som jeg gir dere i dag?

And what great nation has righteous statutes and judgments like this entire law that I am setting before you today?

9 Pass nøye på deg selv og vokt din sjel, så du ikke glemmer de tingene dine øyne har sett, og de ikke går bort fra ditt hjerte alle dine levedager. Lær dem til dine barn og dine barnebarn.

Only be careful and guard your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and so that they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

10 Den dagen du sto framfor Herren din Gud ved Horeb, da Herren sa til meg: «Samle folket for meg, så jeg kan la dem høre mine ord, for at de kan lære å frykte meg i alle de dager de lever på jorden, og for at de kan lære dette til sine barn.»

Remember the day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, when the LORD said to me, 'Assemble the people for Me, and I will let them hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and to teach them to their children.'

11 Dere kom nær og sto ved foten av fjellet, og fjellet brant i ild helt opp til himlene, med mørke, skyer og tett skodde.

You approached and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire up to the very heavens, with darkness, cloud, and thick gloom.

12 Og Herren talte til dere fra ilden. Dere hørte lyden av ordene, men dere så ingen skikkelse, bare en røst.

Then the LORD spoke to you from the midst of the fire. You heard the sound of words, but saw no form—there was only a voice.

13 Han kunngjorde for dere sin pakt som han befalte dere å holde, de ti budene, og han skrev dem på to steintavler.

He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to keep—the Ten Commandments—and He wrote them on two stone tablets.

14 Og Herren befalte meg på den tiden å lære dere lover og forskrifter, for at dere skal handle etter dem i det landet dere går over til for å ta i eie.

The LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, so that you would observe them in the land you are crossing over to possess.

15 Vokt dere nøye, så dere ikke ser noen skikkelse den dagen Herren talte til dere fra ilden på Horeb.

So be very careful for your own lives, because you did not see any form on the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire.

16 Pass på, så dere ikke ødelegger dere selv og lager en utskåret bildeform av noe slag, et avbildning av en mann eller kvinne,

Do not act corruptly by making for yourselves a carved image in the form of any figure, whether male or female.

17 eller av noe dyr på jorden eller av noen fugl som flyr under himmelen,

Or in the form of any animal on the earth, or any bird that flies in the sky,

18 eller av noe som kryper på bakken, eller av noen fisk i vannet under jorden.

Or any creature that moves along the ground, or any fish in the waters below the earth.

19 Og pass nøye på, så du ikke løfter øynene dine opp til himmelen og ser solen, månen og stjernene, hele himmelens hær, og lar deg fristes til å tilbe og tjene dem, ting som Herren din Gud har gitt til alle folk under himmelen.

And be careful not to lift your eyes toward the heavens and see the sun, the moon, and the stars—all the host of heaven—and be led astray to bow down to them and worship them, things the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.

20 Herren tok dere og førte dere ut av jernsmelteovnen, ut av Egypt, for å være hans folk, hans arv, som dere er den dag i dag.

But the LORD has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of His inheritance, as you are today.

21 Men Herren ble vred på meg for deres skyld og sverget at jeg ikke skulle gå over Jordan og komme inn i det gode landet som Herren din Gud gir deg som en arv.

Furthermore, the LORD was angry with me because of you and swore that I would not cross the Jordan nor enter the good land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

22 For jeg skal dø i dette landet. Jeg skal ikke krysse Jordan, men dere skal gå over og ta dette gode landet til eie.

I will die in this land; I am not crossing the Jordan, but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land.

23 Vokt dere, så dere ikke glemmer pakten som Herren deres Gud har sluttet med dere, og lager et utskåret bilde, en skikkelse av noe som Herren din Gud har forbudt deg å lage.

Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which He made with you, and not to make for yourselves a carved image in the form of anything He has forbidden you.

24 For Herren din Gud er en fortærende ild, en nidkjær Gud.

For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

25 Når dere får barn og barnebarn og har bodd lenge i landet, og dere da handler ødeleggende og lager et utskåret bilde av en skikkelse av noe slag, og gjør det onde i Herrens øyne og vekker hans vrede,

When you have children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and if you act corruptly and make a carved image in the form of anything, doing what is evil in the sight of the LORD your God to provoke Him to anger,

26 da kaller jeg himmelen og jorden til vitne mot dere i dag, at dere snart vil bli helt utslettet fra det landet dere går over Jordan for å ta i eie. Dere skal ikke leve lenge der, men dere skal visselig bli ødelagt.

I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today that you will surely be quickly destroyed from the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not extend your days there but will be utterly destroyed.

27 Herren skal spre dere blant folkene, og bare en liten rest av dere skal bli igjen blant de nasjonene som Herren driver dere bort til.

The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD will lead you.

28 Og der skal dere tjene guder, verk av menneskehender, tre og stein, som verken ser eller hører eller spiser eller lukter.

There you will serve gods made by human hands—objects of wood and stone that cannot see, hear, eat, or smell.

29 Men derfra skal dere søke Herren deres Gud, og dere skal finne ham, når dere søker ham av hele deres hjerte og av hele deres sjel.

But from there, you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.

30 Når du er i nød og alle disse tingene kommer over deg i de siste dager, da skal du vende om til Herren din Gud og høre på hans røst.

When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you in the latter days, you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice.

31 For Herren din Gud er en barmhjertig Gud. Han skal ikke forlate deg eller ødelegge deg, og han skal ikke glemme den pakten han har sverget til dine fedre.

For the LORD your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon you, destroy you, or forget the covenant He swore to your ancestors.

32 For spør nå om de tidligere dager, som var før deg, fra den dag Gud skapte mennesket på jorden, og fra den ene enden av himmelen til den andre: Har det noen gang skjedd noe så stort som dette, eller har noe lignende noen gang vært hørt?

Ask now about the days that are past, from the day that God created humanity on the earth, and from one end of the heavens to the other: Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it been heard of?

33 Har noe folk noen gang hørt Guds røst tale ut fra ilden, slik som du har hørt det, og likevel levd?

Has any people heard the voice of God speaking out of the fire, as you have heard, and lived?

34 Eller har noen gud forsøkt å komme og ta seg et folk midt ut av et annet folk med prøvelser, tegn og under, med krig, med sterk hånd og utstrakt arm, og med store og fryktelige gjerninger, slik Herren deres Gud gjorde for dere i Egypt mens dere så det med egne øyne?

Or has any god ever tried to take for himself a nation from within another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, as the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

35 Det ble vist deg for at du skulle vite at Herren er Gud. Det finnes ingen annen foruten ham.

You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.

36 Fra himmelen lot han deg høre sin røst for å oppdra deg, og på jorden lot han deg se sin store ild, og hans ord hørte du fra ilden.

From heaven He caused you to hear His voice to teach you, and on earth He showed you His great fire, and you heard His words out of the fire.

37 Og fordi han elsket dine fedre og valgte deres etterkommere etter dem, førte han deg ut av Egypt med sitt eget nærvær og med sin store kraft,

Because He loved your ancestors, He chose their descendants after them and brought you out of Egypt with His great power and presence.

38 for å drive ut større og sterkere folkeslag foran deg og føre deg inn og gi deg deres land som arv, slik det er i dag.

He drove out nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you into their land and to give it to you as an inheritance, as it is today.

39 Så skal du i dag vite og ta det til hjertet at Herren er Gud i himmelen der oppe og på jorden her nede. Det finnes ingen annen.

So know today and take it to heart that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.

40 Derfor skal du holde hans lover og bud som jeg befaler deg i dag, så det kan gå deg og dine barn etter deg vel, og så du kan leve lenge i det landet som Herren din Gud gir deg alle dine dager.

Keep His statutes and commandments that I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you, and that you may live long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for all time.

41 Da skilte Moses ut tre byer på den østlige siden av Jordan,

Then Moses set apart three cities east of the Jordan.

42 så en drapsmann som hadde drept sin nabo uten hensikt, og uten å ha hatt fiendtlighet mot ham tidligere, kunne flykte dit og redde livet ved å ta tilflukt i en av disse byene.

These were for anyone who accidentally killed a neighbor without prior hostility, so that they could flee to one of these cities and live.

43 Bezer i ørkenen på slettelandet ble utpekt for Rubenittene, Ramot i Gilead for Gadittene og Golan i Basan for Manassittene.

The cities were Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.

44 Dette er loven som Moses satte fram for Israels barn.

This is the law that Moses set before the Israelites.

45 Disse er vitnesbyrdene, lovene og forskriftene som Moses talte til Israels barn da de dro ut av Egypt:

These are the testimonies, statutes, and judgments that Moses spoke to the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

46 på den andre siden av Jordan, i dalen midt imot Bet-Peor, i landet som tilhørte Sihon, amorittenes konge, som bodde i Hesjbon, og som Moses og Israels barn slo da de dro ut av Egypt.

They were given east of the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon. Moses and the Israelites defeated him when they came out of Egypt.

47 Og de tok hans land i eie, og landet til Og, kongen av Basan – de to kongene av amorittene – på den andre siden av Jordan, mot øst.

They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan—the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.

48 Deres område strakte seg fra Aroer, som ligger ved kanten av Arnon-dalen, til fjellet Sion, det samme som Hermon,

This territory extended from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sion (which is Hermon),

49 og hele Arabasletten på andre siden av Jordan, østover, helt til Arabahavet, under Pisgas skråninger.

and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Sea of the Arabah, below the slopes of Pisgah.
