1 Og hele Israels menighet reiste fra ørkenen Sin, etter Yahwehs befaling, og slo leir i Rephidim. Men folket hadde ikke vann å drikke.

Then the entire assembly of the children of Israel set out from the Wilderness of Sin, traveling from one place to another as directed by the LORD. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.

2 Der begynte folket å krangle med Moses og sa: 'Gi oss vann så vi kan drikke!' Moses svarte dem: 'Hvorfor krangler dere med meg? Hvorfor setter dere Yahweh på prøve?'

So the people quarreled with Moses, saying, "Give us water to drink." Moses replied to them, "Why are you quarreling with me? Why are you testing the LORD?"

3 Folket tørstet etter vann der, og de klaget på Moses og sa: 'Hvorfor har du ført oss opp fra Egypt for å la oss, våre barn og vår buskap dø av tørst?'

But the people were very thirsty for water there, and they complained against Moses, saying, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?"

4 Da ropte Moses til Yahweh og sa: 'Hva skal jeg gjøre med dette folket? Det er snart så de steiner meg!'

Then Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, "What should I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me!"

5 Yahweh sa til Moses: 'Gå foran folket og ta med deg noen av Israels eldste. Ta også staven du slo elven med og gå.'

The LORD answered Moses, "Go ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go."

6 'Se, jeg vil stå foran deg der på klippen i Horeb, og du skal slå på klippen. Da vil det strømme vann fra den, og folket kan drikke.' Moses gjorde dette for øynene på Israels eldste.

The LORD continued, "I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7 Han kalte stedet Massah og Meribah på grunn av Israels barns krangel og fordi de satte Yahweh på prøve, og sa: 'Er Yahweh blant oss eller ikke?'

And he named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the LORD, saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?"

8 Da kom Amalek og angrep Israel ved Rephidim.

Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.

9 Moses sa til Josva: 'Velg ut noen menn for oss og dra ut og kjemp mot Amalek. I morgen vil jeg stå på toppen av haugen med Guds stav i hånden.'

Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some men for us and go out to fight against Amalek. Tomorrow, I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."

10 Josva gjorde som Moses hadde sagt, og kjempet mot Amalek, mens Moses, Aron og Hur gikk opp på toppen av haugen.

So Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought against Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 Når Moses løftet opp hånden, fikk Israel overtaket, men når han senket hånden, fikk Amalek overtaket.

As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered his hands, Amalek prevailed.

12 Da Moses' hender ble tunge, tok de en stein og satte den under ham, og han satte seg på den. Aron og Hur støttet hendene hans, én på hver side, og hans hender holdt seg stø dig inntil solen gikk ned.

When Moses' hands grew heavy, they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so his hands remained steady until sunset.

13 Josva slo Amalek og hans folk ved sverdet.

So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the sword.

14 Yahweh sa til Moses: 'Skriv dette opp som en minnetavle i en bok og fortell Josva at jeg vil utslette minnet om Amalek under himmelen.'

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it to Joshua: 'I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.'"

15 Moses bygde et alter og kalte det "Yahweh er mitt banner."

Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.

16 Han sa: 'Hånden er løftet mot Yahwehs trone; Yahweh vil ha krig mot Amalek fra slekt til slekt.'

He said, "Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the LORD, the LORD will be at war with Amalek from generation to generation."
