A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became four rivers.

The name of the first is Pishon, which circles through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold.

Og gullet i det landet er godt; der finnes også bedolakh og onyxstein.

The name of the second river is Gihon, which flows around the entire land of Cush.

Navnet på den tredje elven er Tigris, den som renner øst for Assyria, og den fjerde elven er Eufrat.

The name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

Herren Gud tok mannen og satte ham i Edens hage til å dyrke og passe den.

The LORD God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to take care of it.

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, 'You may surely eat from any tree of the garden,'

Then the LORD God said, 'It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is suitable for him.'

Så formet Herren Gud av jorden alle markens dyr og alle himmelens fugler og førte dem til mannen for å se hva han ville kalle dem. Og det mannen kalte alle levende skapninger, det ble deres navn.

Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground every beast of the field and every bird of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them. Whatever the man called each living creature, that became its name.

The man gave names to all the livestock, to the birds of the air, and to all the wild animals. But no suitable helper was found for the man.

So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and while he slept, He took one of his ribs and closed up the place with flesh.

Og Herren Gud bygde av ribbeinet han hadde tatt fra mannen, en kvinne, og han førte henne til mannen.

Then the LORD God formed the rib He had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.

Da sa mannen: «Nå er det ben av mine ben og kjøtt av mitt kjøtt. Hun skal kalles kvinne, for av mannen er hun tatt.»

The man said, 'This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called "woman," for she was taken out of man.'

Derfor skal en mann forlate sin far og sin mor og holde seg til sin hustru, og de to skal være ett kjøtt.

For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Og de var begge nakne, mannen og hans hustru, men de skammet seg ikke.

The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
