In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not a single thing came into being that has come into existence.

In Him was life, and that life was the light of mankind.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe.

He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

The true Light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.

He came to His own, but His own people did not receive Him.

Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.

They were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Og Ordet ble kjød og tok bolig iblant oss, og vi så hans herlighet, en herlighet som den enbårne Sønn har fra sin Far, full av nåde og sannhet.

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Johannes vitnet om ham og ropte: Det var om ham jeg sa: Han som kommer etter meg, er kommet foran meg, fordi han var før meg.

John testified about Him and cried out, saying, 'This is the one I spoke about when I said, “He who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.”'

Og av hans fylde har vi alle mottatt nåde, nåde over nåde.

From His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

They asked him, 'Then who are you? Are you Elijah?' He said, 'I am not.' 'Are you the Prophet?' He answered, 'No.'

So they said to him, 'Who are you? Tell us so we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?'

He replied, 'I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Make straight the way for the Lord,” as the prophet Isaiah said.'

Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.

Og de spurte ham og sa til ham: Hvorfor døper du da, hvis du ikke er Kristus, heller ikke Elias, heller ikke profeten?

They asked him, 'Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?'

Johannes svarte dem og sa: Jeg døper med vann; men en står midt iblant dere som dere ikke kjenner,

John answered them, saying, 'I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know.'

He is the one who comes after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.

This all happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!'

This is the one I was talking about when I said, “A man who comes after me has surpassed me because He was before me.”

I myself did not know Him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that He might be revealed to Israel.

Then John testified, saying, 'I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him.'

I myself did not know Him, but the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.'

I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.

Dagen etter stod Johannes der igjen med to av sine disipler.

The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples.

Han så Jesus gå der, og han sa: Se, Guds lam!

When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, 'Look, the Lamb of God!'

Hans to disipler hørte ham si dette, og de fulgte Jesus.

The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

Jesus snudde seg og så at de fulgte ham, og sier til dem: Hva søker dere? De sa til ham: Rabbi (som betyr lærer), hvor bor du?

Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, 'What do you want?' They said, 'Rabbi' (which means Teacher), 'where are you staying?'

Han sa til dem: Kom, så skal dere se. De kom og så hvor han bodde, og ble hos ham den dagen. Det var omkring den tiende time.

He said to them, 'Come, and you will see.' So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

Andreas, Simon Peters bror, var en av de to som hadde hørt det av Johannes og hadde fulgt ham.

Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who had heard John's testimony and followed Jesus.

Denne fant først sin egen bror Simon og sa til ham: Vi har funnet Messias (som betyr Kristus).

He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which means Christ).

Og han førte ham til Jesus. Jesus så på ham og sa: Du er Simon, Johannes’ sønn. Du skal kalles Kefas (som betyr Peter).

Then he brought him to Jesus, who looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of Jonah. You will be called Cephas' (which when translated is Peter).

Dagen etter ville han dra til Galilea. Han fant Filip og sa til ham: Følg meg!

The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, He said to him, 'Follow Me.'

Filip var fra Betsaida, samme by som Andreas og Peter.

Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Filip finner Natanael og sier til ham: Vi har funnet han som Moses har skrevet om i loven, og som profetene har skrevet om, Jesus fra Nasaret, Josefs sønn.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, 'We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and so did the prophets: Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.'

Natanael sa til ham: Kan det komme noe godt fra Nasaret? Filip sier til ham: Kom og se!

'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' Nathanael asked. Philip said to him, 'Come and see.'

Jesus så Natanael komme mot seg og sa om ham: Se, en virkelig israelitt, i ham er det ikke svik!

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said about him, 'Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!'

Natanael sier til han: Hvor kjenner du meg fra? Jesus svarte og sa til ham: Før Filip kalte deg, så jeg deg under fikentreet.

Nathanael asked Him, 'How do you know me?' Jesus replied, 'Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you.'

Natanael svarte ham: Rabbi, du er Guds Sønn, du er Israels konge!

Nathanael responded, 'Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel!'

Jesus svarte og sa til ham: Fordi jeg sa deg at jeg så deg under fikentreet, tror du? Du skal få se større ting enn disse.

Jesus answered, 'Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.'

Og han sier til ham: Sannelig, sannelig, sier jeg dere, fra nå av skal dere se himmelen åpnet og Guds engler stige opp og stige ned over Menneskesønnen.

Then He said, 'Truly, truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.'
