1 Den tjuefjerde dagen av denne måneden samlet Israels barn seg med faste, sekkestrie og jord på seg.

On the twenty-fourth day of this month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting, wearing sackcloth, and putting dust on their heads.

2 Israels etterkommere skilte seg ut fra alle fremmede folk, og de stod frem og bekjente sine synder og sine fedres skyld.

The descendants of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, stood, and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.

3 De reiste seg på sine plasser og leste opp fra Herrens, sin Guds, lovbok en fjerdepart av dagen, og en annen fjerdepart bekjente de sine synder og tilba Herren sin Gud.

They stood in their places and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and for another quarter, they confessed and worshiped the LORD their God.

4 Levittene Jesjua, Bani, Kadmiel, Sjevania, Bunni, Sjerebja, Bani og Kenani stod på en opphøyd plattform og ropte høyt til Herren sin Gud.

Standing on the platform of the Levites were Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and they cried out with a loud voice to the LORD their God.

5 Levittiske ledere, Jesjua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hasjabneja, Sjerebja, Hodija, Sjevania og Petahja, sa: 'Reis dere og lov Herren deres Gud, som er fra evighet og til evighet! Må hans herlige navn bli lovprist og opphøyd over alle velsignelser og lovsanger.'

Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—said: Stand up and bless the LORD your God who is from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be Your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

6 Du alene er Herren. Du har skapt himlene, himlenes himmel og alle deres hærskarer, jorden og alt som er på den, havene og alt som er i dem. Du gir liv til alt, og himmelens hær skjelver for deg.

You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, the highest heavens, and all their hosts, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all things, and the host of heaven worships You.

7 Du er Herren, Gud, som utvalgte Abram, førte ham ut fra Ur i Kaldea og ga ham navnet Abraham.

You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham.

8 Du fant hans hjerte trofast for ditt ansikt og gjorde en pakt med ham om å gi Kanaanittenes, Hetittenes, Amorittenes, Perisittenes, Jebusittenes og Girgasittenes land til hans etterkommere. Og du holdt dine løfter, for du er rettferdig.

You found his heart faithful before You, and You made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites, and Girgashites to his descendants. And You have kept Your promise because You are righteous.

9 Du så våre fedres nød i Egypt og hørte deres rop ved Sivsjøen.

You saw the oppression of our ancestors in Egypt and heard their cry at the Red Sea.

10 Du gjorde tegn og under mot farao, mot hans tjenere og hele hans folk, for du visste hvor hovmodige de handlet mot dem, og du skapte deg et navn, som det er den dag i dag.

You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew how arrogantly they treated them. And You made a name for Yourself that endures to this day.

11 Du delte havet foran dem, så de gikk tørrskodde gjennom midten av havet, mens du kastet deres forfølgere i dypet, som en stein i mektige vann.

You divided the sea before them, and they passed through it on dry ground. But You cast their pursuers into the depths like a stone into mighty waters.

12 Du ledet dem om dagen i en skystøtte og om natten i en ildstøtte for å lyse dem på veien de skulle gå.

By day, You led them with a pillar of cloud and by night with a pillar of fire, to give them light for the path they should follow.

13 Du steg ned på Sinai-fjellet, talte til dem fra himmelen og ga dem rettferdige lover, sann undervisning, gode forskrifter og bud.

You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke to them from heaven. You gave them upright judgments, true laws, good statutes, and commandments.

14 Du kunngjorde dem din hellige sabbat og ga dem bud, forskrifter og en lov gjennom Moses, din tjener.

You made Your holy Sabbath known to them, and You gave them commandments, statutes, and laws through Your servant Moses.

15 Du ga dem brød fra himmelen når de var sultne, og førte vann ut av klippen når de var tørste. Du sa til dem at de skulle gå inn og ta landet i eie, det landet du med opphøyet hånd hadde lovet å gi dem.

You provided bread from heaven for their hunger and brought water out of a rock for their thirst. You told them to go in and take possession of the land You had sworn to give them.

16 Men de, våre fedre, handlet hovmodig, ble stivnakkede og hørte ikke på dine bud.

But they, our ancestors, acted arrogantly. They stiffened their necks and did not obey Your commandments.

17 De nektet å høre etter og glemte de undrene du hadde gjort blant dem. De ble stivnakkede og utnevnte en leder for å vende tilbake til sitt slaveri i Egypt. Men du, Gud, er full av tilgivelse, barmhjertig og nådig, sen til vrede og rik på miskunn. Derfor forlot du dem ikke.

They refused to listen and did not remember the wonders You performed among them. They stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abundant in faithful love, and You did not abandon them.

18 Selv da de laget seg en støpt kalv og sa: 'Dette er din Gud, som førte deg opp fra Egypt,' og gjorde store bespottelser,

Even when they made a molten calf for themselves and said, 'This is your god who brought you out of Egypt,' and they committed terrible blasphemies,

19 overga du dem ikke i ørkenen på grunn av din store barmhjertighet. Skystøtten vek ikke fra dem om dagen for å lede dem på veien, og ildstøtten var om natten for å lyse dem veien de skulle ta.

You, in Your great mercy, did not abandon them in the wilderness. During the day, the pillar of cloud did not depart to guide them on their way, nor did the pillar of fire by night to give them light for the path they should take.

20 Du ga dem din gode Ånd for å lære dem, du nektet dem ikke manna til mat, og du ga dem vann til å slukke deres tørst.

You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold manna from their mouths, and You provided water for their thirst.

21 I førti år sørget du for dem i ørkenen. De manglet ingenting, klærne ble ikke utslitt, og føttene deres hovnet ikke opp.

For forty years You sustained them in the wilderness; they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out, and their feet did not swell.

22 Du ga dem kongeriker og folkeslag, og fordelte dem etter områder. De tok landet til Sihon, kongen i Hesjbon, og landet til Og, kongen i Basan, i eie.

You gave them kingdoms and nations, dividing them into regions. They took possession of the land of Sihon, the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og, king of Bashan.

23 Du gjorde deres barn tallrike som himmelens stjerner og førte dem inn i landet som du hadde lovet deres fedre at de skulle gå inn og eie.

You multiplied their descendants like the stars of heaven and brought them to the land You had promised their ancestors they would enter and take possession of.

24 Deres barn kom inn og tok landet i eie. Du ydmyket landets innbyggere, kanaanittene, foran dem og ga dem i deres hender, sammen med deres konger og folkene i landet, så de kunne gjøre med dem som de selv ønsket.

Their descendants went in and took possession of the land. You subdued the inhabitants of the land—the Canaanites—before them and handed their kings and the peoples of the land over to them, to do with as they desired.

25 De inntok befestede byer og et fruktbart land. De tok hus fulle av alt godt, uthogde brønner, vingårder, olivenlunder og frukttrær i mengde. De spiste seg mette og ble fete og levde i overflod på din store godhet.

They captured fortified cities and fertile land. They took possession of houses filled with every good thing, hewn cisterns, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. They ate, were satisfied, grew fat, and delighted themselves in Your great goodness.

26 Men de var ulydige og gjorde opprør mot deg. De kastet din lov bak ryggen, drepte dine profeter som hadde vitnet imot dem for å få dem til å vende tilbake til deg, og de gjorde store bespottelser.

But they were disobedient and rebelled against You. They cast Your law behind their backs and killed Your prophets who warned them to turn back to You. They committed terrible blasphemies.

27 Du overga dem i deres fienders hånd, som undertrykte dem. Men når de var i nød, ropte de til deg, og du hørte fra himmelen. Etter din store barmhjertighet sendte du dem frelsere som berget dem fra deres fiender.

So You handed them over to their enemies, who oppressed them. But in their time of distress, they cried out to You, and You heard from heaven. In Your great mercy, You gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.

28 Men så snart de hadde fått ro, gjorde de igjen det som var ondt for ditt ansikt. Derfor overga du dem i deres fienders hånd, som hersket over dem. Men når de vendte om og ropte til deg, hørte du fra himmelen og reddet dem gang på gang etter din store barmhjertighet.

But as soon as they had rest, they returned to doing evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to their enemies, who ruled over them. Yet when they again cried out to You, You heard from heaven and rescued them many times in Your abundant mercy.

29 Du vitnet imot dem for å føre dem tilbake til din lov, men de var hovmodige og hørte ikke på dine bud. De syndet mot dine forskrifter, som gir liv til den som holder dem. De vendte ryggen til, var stivnakkede og nektet å høre.

You warned them to return to Your law, but they acted arrogantly and did not obey Your commandments. They sinned against Your judgments, which, if a person does, they will live by them. Stubbornly, they turned their backs, stiffened their necks, and would not listen.

30 Du var tålmodig med dem i mange år og vitnet mot dem ved din Ånd gjennom dine profeter. Men de ville ikke lytte. Derfor overga du dem i hedningefolkenes hånd.

For many years, You were patient with them. You warned them by Your Spirit through Your prophets, yet they would not listen. So You gave them into the hands of the peoples of the lands.

31 Likevel i din store barmhjertighet gjorde du ikke ende på dem og forlot dem ikke, for du er en nådig og barmhjertig Gud.

Still, in Your great mercies, You did not utterly destroy them or abandon them, for You are a gracious and merciful God.

32 Og nå, vår Gud, du store, mektige og fryktinngytende Gud, som holder pakt og kjærlighet, la ikke all denne nøden som har kommet over oss – våre konger, ledere, prester, profeter, forfedre og hele folket – fra assyrerkongenes dager til i dag, synes liten for ditt ansikt.

Now therefore, our God, the great, mighty, and awesome God who keeps His covenant and steadfast love, do not let the hardship that has come upon us—on our kings, leaders, priests, prophets, ancestors, and on all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today—seem insignificant to You.

33 Du er rettferdig i alt som har kommet over oss, for du har handlet trofast, mens vi har vært onde.

You are righteous in all that has happened to us, because You have acted faithfully while we have acted wickedly.

34 Våre konger, ledere, prester og forfedre har ikke holdt din lov eller hørt på dine bud og vitnesbyrd som du vitnet mot dem.

Our kings, leaders, priests, and ancestors did not obey Your law or pay attention to Your commandments and warnings You gave them.

35 De tjente deg ikke i sitt eget kongerike, eller i din store godhet som du hadde gitt dem, eller i det rike og fruktbare landet du satte foran dem. De vendte ikke om fra sine onde handlinger.

Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying Your abundant goodness and the spacious, fertile land You gave them, they did not serve You or turn from their evil deeds.

36 Se, vi er slaver i dag, i det landet du ga våre fedre for å spise dets frukt og godhet – se, vi er slaver i det!

Here we are today, slaves in the land You gave to our ancestors so they could enjoy its fruit and its goodness—here we are, slaves in it!

37 Dets rikelige avling går til kongene som du har satt over oss på grunn av våre synder. De hersker over våre kropper og vår buskap etter deres vilje, og vi er i stor nød.

Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please, and we are in great distress.
