The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:

Send men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. You are to send one man from each ancestral tribe, each one a leader among them.

3 Moses sendte dem fra Parans ørken etter Herrens befaling. Alle disse mennene var ledere blant israelittene.

So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran at the LORD’s command. All of them were men who were leaders of the Israelites.

These were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur;

5 For Simeons stamme, Shafat, sønn av Hori.

from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;

6 For Judas stamme, Kaleb, sønn av Jefunne.

from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;

7 For Issakars stamme, Igal, sønn av Josef.

from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;

8 For Efraims stamme, Hosea, sønn av Nun.

from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;

9 For Benjamins stamme, Palti, sønn av Rafu.

from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;

10 For Sebulons stamme, Gaddiel, sønn av Sodi.

from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;

11 For Josefs stamme, det vil si for Manasses stamme, Gaddi, sønn av Susi.

from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;

12 For Dans stamme, Ammiel, sønn av Gemalli.

15 For Gads stamme, Geuel, sønn av Maki.

from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. Moses called Hoshea son of Nun, Joshua.

17 Moses sendte dem for å utforske Kanaans land og sa til dem: Gå opp gjennom Negev og opp i fjellene.

When Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, he said to them, “Go up through the Negev and then into the hill country.

18 Se hvordan landet er, og hvordan folket som bor der er, om de er sterke eller svake, få eller mange.

See what the land is like, and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many.

19 Hvordan er landet de bor i? Er det godt eller dårlig? Hvordan er byene de bor i? Er de ubevoktede eller festninger?

Is the land they live in good or bad? Are the towns they dwell in unwalled or fortified?

20 Hvordan er jorden? Er den fet eller mager? Er det trær der eller ikke? Vær modige og ta med noe av landets frukt. Det var nettopp tiden for de første modne druene.

And what is the land like—is it fertile or barren? Does it have trees or not? Be courageous, and bring back some of the fruit of the land.” It was the season for the first ripe grapes.

21 De dro opp og utforsket landet fra ørkenen Sin til Rehob, ved inngangen til Hamat.

So they went up and explored the land from the Wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.

22 De dro opp gjennom Negev og kom til Hebron, hvor Ahiman, Sheshai og Talmai, etterkommerne av Anak, bodde. Hebron var bygd sju år før Soan i Egypt.

They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, descendants of Anak, were living. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 Da de kom til dalen Esjkol, skar de av en grein med en drueklase som de bar mellom to staver. De tok også med seg granatepler og fikener.

When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch with a single cluster of grapes. They carried it on a pole between two of them, along with some pomegranates and figs.

That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there.

25 Etter førti dager vendte de tilbake fra å utforske landet.

At the end of forty days, they returned from exploring the land.

26 De kom tilbake til Moses og Aron og hele menigheten av israelittene i ørkenen Paran ved Kadesj. Der ga de rapport og viste dem fruktene fra landet.

They came back to Moses, Aaron, and the entire assembly of the Israelites at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Paran. There they reported to them and showed them the fruit of the land.

27 De fortalte dem: Vi kom til landet du sendte oss til. Det flyter virkelig av melk og honning, og her er fruktene!

They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and indeed it flows with milk and honey. Here is its fruit.

28 Men folket som bor i landet er sterkt, og byene er store og godt befestet. Vi så også Anakittene der.

However, the people who live there are strong, and the cities are large and very fortified. We even saw the descendants of Anak there.

29 Amalekittene bor i Negev-regionen, hetittene, jebusittene og amorittene bor i fjellene, og kanaaneerne bor ved sjøen og langs Jordanelva.

The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites dwell in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.

30 Kaleb roet folket foran Moses og sa: La oss dra opp og ta landet i eie, for vi kan helt sikkert greie det.

Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

31 Men mennene som hadde vært med ham, sa: Vi kan ikke gå opp mot dette folket, for de er sterkere enn oss.

But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot attack these people, for they are stronger than we are."

32 De spredte et dårlig rykte om landet de hadde utforsket blant israelittene og sa: Landet vi har reist igjennom og utforsket, er et land som fortærer sine innbyggere. Alle menneskene vi så der, var av stor størrelse.

And they spread a bad report about the land they had explored among the Israelites, saying, "The land we explored devours those who live in it, and all the people we saw there are of great size.

33 Vi så også kjempene, Anakittenes etterkommere, og vi følte oss som gresshopper i våre egne øyne, og det gjorde vi også i deres øyne.

We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim. To ourselves, we seemed like grasshoppers, and we seemed the same to them."
