1 Da kom Nahas, ammonitten, og slo leir mot Jabesj i Gilead. Alle mennene i Jabesj sa til Nahas: Lag en pakt med oss, så skal vi tjene deg.

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

2 Nahas, ammonitten, svarte dem: På denne betingelsen vil jeg lage en pakt med dere, at alle deres høyre øyne blir stukket ut, og jeg vil gjøre det til en vanære for hele Israel.

And Nahash the Ammonite said unto them, On this condition will I make it with you, that all your right eyes be put out; and I will lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

3 De eldste i Jabesj sa til ham: Gi oss sju dagers frist, så vi kan sende budbringere til alle Israels grenser. Hvis ingen kommer for å redde oss, skal vi overgi oss til deg.

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the borders of Israel; and then, if there be none to save us, we will come out to thee.

4 Budbringerne kom til Gibea, der Saul bodde, og sa disse ordene til folket. Da løftet hele folket sin røst og gråt.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and spake these words in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

5 Saul kom fra marken bak oksene, og han sa: Hva er det folk gråter for? De fortalte ham da ordene fra mennene i Jabesj.

And, behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

6 Og Guds Ånd kom mektig over Saul da han hørte disse ordene, og hans vrede flammet opp sterkt.

And the Spirit of God came mightily upon Saul when he heard those words, and his anger was kindled greatly.

7 Han tok et par okser, skar dem i stykker og sendte dem rundt i hele Israels grenser ved budbringernes hender, og sa: Den som ikke følger Saul og Samuel, vil få sine okser gjort slik. Frykten for Herren falt på folket, og de dro ut som én mann.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the dread of Jehovah fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

8 Han talte dem i Besek, og Israels barn var tre hundre tusen, og Judas menn tretti tusen.

And he numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

9 De sa til budbringerne som kom: Dette skal dere si til mennene i Jabesj i Gilead: I morgen, når solen er het, skal dere få frelse. Budbringerne gikk og fortalte dette til mennene i Jabesj, og de ble glade.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow, by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have deliverance. And the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

10 Mennene i Jabesj sa: I morgen skal vi komme ut til dere, så skal dere gjøre med oss hva dere synes er godt.

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To-morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

11 Neste dag delte Saul folket i tre kompanier. De kom inn i midten av leiren på morgenvakten, slo ammonittene inntil dagens hete, og de som ble tilbake, ble spredt, så ikke to av dem var sammen.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and smote the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they that remained were scattered, so that not two of them were left together.

12 Folket sa til Samuel: Hvem sa: Skal Saul herske over oss? Bring disse mennene hit, så vi kan drepe dem.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

13 Men Saul sa: Ingen skal drepes i dag, for i dag har Herren gitt frelse i Israel.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day; for to-day Jehovah hath wrought deliverance in Israel.

14 Samuel sa til folket: Kom, la oss dra til Gilgal og fornye kongedømmet der.

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

15 Hele folket dro til Gilgal, og der gjorde de Saul til konge for Herren i Gilgal. Der ofret de fredsofre for Herren, og Saul og alle Israels menn gledet seg stort.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Jehovah in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
