1 Filisterne hadde tatt Guds ark og brakt den fra Eben-Eser til Asdod.

Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Eben-ezer unto Ashdod.

2 Filisterne tok Guds ark og førte den inn i Dagons tempel og satte den ved siden av Dagon.

And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

3 Da de i Asdod stod opp tidlig morgenen etter, se, Dagon hadde falt med ansiktet mot jorden foran Jehovas ark. De tok Dagon og satte ham på plass igjen.

And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

4 Da de sto opp tidlig neste morgen, se, Dagon hadde falt med ansiktet mot jorden foran Jehovas ark; hodet og begge håndflatene til Dagon lå avkuttet på terskelen; bare kroppen av Dagon var igjen.

And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of Jehovah; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands `lay' cut off upon the threshold; only `the stump of' Dagon was left to him.

5 Derfor trør verken prestene til Dagon eller noen som kommer inn i hans tempel, på terskelen til Dagon i Asdod, til denne dag.

Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, unto this day.

6 Men Jehovas hånd var tung over folkene i Asdod, og han slo dem med svulster, både Asdod og omegn.

But the hand of Jehovah was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with tumors, even Ashdod and the borders thereof.

7 Da mennene i Asdod så hva som skjedde, sa de: Guds ark for Israel skal ikke bli hos oss, for hans hånd er tung mot oss og vår gud Dagon.

And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us; for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

8 De sendte derfor bud og samlet alle filisternes fyrster og sa: Hva skal vi gjøre med Guds ark for Israel? De svarte: La Guds ark for Israel flyttes til Gat. Og de flyttet Guds ark til Gat.

They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel `thither'.

9 Men etter at de hadde flyttet den, var Jehovas hånd mot byen og forårsaket en stor forvirring. Han slo byens folk, både små og store, og svulster brøt ut på dem.

And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of Jehovah was against the city with a very great discomfiture: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great; and tumors brake out upon them.

10 Så sendte de Guds ark til Ekron. Da Guds ark kom til Ekron, ropte ekronittene: De har flyttet Guds ark for Israel til oss for å drepe oss og vårt folk.

So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

11 De sendte bud og samlet alle filisternes fyrster og sa: Send bort Guds ark for Israel, og la den vende tilbake til sitt sted, så den ikke dreper oss og vårt folk. For en dødbringende forvirring hadde omfavnet hele byen; Guds hånd var svært tung der.

They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that is slay us not, and our people. For there was a deadly discomfiture throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

12 De som ikke døde, ble rammet av svulster, og byens skrik nådde opp til himmelen.

And the men that died not were smitten with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
