1 Det var en mann fra Benjamin som het Kish, sønn av Abiel, sønn av Zeror, sønn av Bekorat, sønn av Afiah av Benjamins stamme, en mektig kriger.

Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.

2 Han hadde en sønn ved navn Saul, en ung og vakker mann; blant Israels barn fantes det ingen vakrere enn ham: fra skuldrene og opp var han høyere enn noen av folket.

And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a young man and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

3 Eslene til Kish, Sauls far, var bortkommet. Og Kish sa til sin sønn Saul: Ta med deg en av tjenerne og dra av sted for å finne eslene.

And the asses of Kish, Saul's father, were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

4 De dro gjennom Efraims fjelland og gjennom landet Shalisha, men de fant dem ikke. Så dro de gjennom landet Sha'alim, men heller ikke der var de å finne. De dro videre til Benjamins land, men fant dem ikke.

And he passed through the hill-country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.

5 Da de kom til landet Zuf, sa Saul til tjeneren som var med ham: Kom, la oss vende tilbake, så ikke min far slutter å bekymre seg for eslene og begynner å bli engstelig for oss.

When they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return, lest my father leave off caring for the asses, and be anxious for us.

6 Men tjeneren svarte: Se, i denne byen er det en Guds mann, en høyt ansett mann; alt han sier, skjer. La oss gå dit, kanskje kan han gi oss råd om veien vi skal ta.

And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is a man that is held in honor; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can tell us concerning our journey whereon we go.

7 Saul sa til tjeneren sin: Men hva skal vi ta med til mannen? Vi har ikke mer brød i våre sekker, og vi har ingen gave å gi Guds mann. Hva har vi?

Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

8 Tjeneren svarte Saul igjen og sa: Se, jeg har en fjerdedels sekel sølv i hånden. Det vil jeg gi til Guds mann, så han kan fortelle oss veien vår.

And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.

9 (Tidligere i Israel, når noen gikk for å spørre Gud, sa de: Kom, la oss gå til seeren; for det som nå kalles profet, ble før kalt seer.)

(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he said, Come, and let us go to the seer; for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

10 Saul sa da til tjeneren sin: Godt sagt; la oss gå. Så dro de til byen der Guds mann var.

Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.

11 Da de gikk opp til byen, møtte de unge jenter som skulle hente vann, og de spurte dem: Er seeren her?

As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

12 De svarte dem: Ja, han er her. Skynd dere nå, for han har kommet til byen i dag, fordi folket har et offer på haugstedet i dag.

And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, `he is' before thee: make haste now, for he is come to-day into the city; for the people have a sacrifice to-day in the high place:

13 Så snart dere kommer inn i byen, vil dere finne ham, før han går opp til haugstedet for å spise; for folket spiser ikke før han kommer, fordi han velsigner offeret; deretter spiser de innbudne. Gå opp, for nå vil dere finne ham.

as soon as ye are come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he goeth up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; `and' afterwards they eat that are bidden. Now therefore get you up; for at this time ye shall find him.

14 De gikk opp til byen; og da de var på vei inn, kom Samuel mot dem for å gå opp til haugstedet.

And they went up to the city; `and' as they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them, to go up to the high place.

15 Herren hadde åpenbart for Samuel dagen før Saul kom, og sagt:

Now Jehovah had revealed unto Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,

16 I morgen på denne tid vil jeg sende deg en mann fra Benjamins land, og du skal salve ham til fyrste over mitt folk Israel; han skal frelse folket mitt fra filistrenes hånd, for jeg har sett til folket mitt, fordi deres rop har nådd meg.

To-morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be prince over my people Israel; and he shall save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

17 Da Samuel så Saul, sa Herren til ham: Se, det er mannen jeg talte til deg om! Han skal ha myndighet over mitt folk.

And when Samuel saw Saul, Jehovah said unto him, Behold, the man of whom I spake to thee! this same shall have authority over my people.

18 Saul nærmet seg Samuel i porten og sa: Vær så snill og fortell meg hvor seerens hus er.

Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.

19 Samuel svarte Saul og sa: Jeg er seeren; gå opp foran meg til haugstedet, for i dag skal dere spise med meg, og i morgen vil jeg la deg gå og fortelle deg alt som er i hjertet ditt.

And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer; go up before me unto the high place, for ye shall eat with me to-day: and in the morning I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thy heart.

20 Når det gjelder eslene som du mistet for tre dager siden, trenger du ikke bekymre deg for dem, for de er funnet. Og hvem er det alle i Israel ønsker? Er det ikke deg og hele din fars hus?

And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not they mind on them; for they are found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for thee, and for all thy father's house?

21 Saul svarte og sa: Er jeg ikke en benjaminit, fra den minste av Israels stammer? Og er ikke min slekt den minste av alle slektene i Benjamins stamme? Hvorfor taler du slik til meg?

And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou to me after this manner?

22 Samuel tok Saul og tjeneren hans og førte dem til gjesterommet og ga dem den fornemste plassen blant dem som var invitert, omkring tretti personer.

And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest-chamber, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, who were about thirty persons.

23 Samuel sa til kokken: Bring den delen som jeg ga deg og ba deg legge til side.

And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.

24 Kokken tok opp låret og det som var på det, og satte det foran Saul. Samuel sa: Se, det er det som er holdt av. Sett det foran deg og spis, for det er holdt av til deg til denne tid; jeg har jo invitert folket. Saul spiste da med Samuel den dagen.

And the cook took up the thigh, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And `Samuel' said, Behold, that which hath been reserved! set it before thee and eat; because unto the appointed time hath it been kept for thee, for I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

25 Da de kom ned fra haugstedet til byen, samtalte Samuel med Saul på hustaket.

And when they were come down from the high place into the city, he communed with Saul upon the housetop.

26 Tidlig neste morgen, ved morgengry, ropte Samuel til Saul på hustaket, og sa: Stå opp, så jeg kan la deg gå. Saul sto opp, og begge gikk ut, både han og Samuel.

And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

27 Da de nærmet seg bykanten, sa Samuel til Saul: Be tjeneren gå foran oss (og han gikk videre), men stå stille en stund, så jeg kan la deg høre Guds ord.

As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us (and he passed on), but stand thou still first, that I may cause thee to hear the word of God.
