1 Da Rehabeam kom til Jerusalem, samlet han hele Judas og Benjamins hus, hundre og åtti tusen utvalgte krigere, for å kjempe mot Israel og føre riket tilbake til Rehabeam.

And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled the house of Judah and Benjamin, a hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, that were warriors, to fight against Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam.

2 Men Herrens ord kom til Sjemaja, Guds mann, og sa:

But the word of Jehovah came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

3 Tal til Rehabeam, Salomos sønn, kongen av Juda, og til hele Israel i Juda og Benjamin, og si:

Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, saying,

4 Så sier Herren: Dere skal ikke dra opp og kjempe mot deres brødre. Vend tilbake, hver mann til sitt hus, for dette er fra meg. Så hørte de på Herrens ord og vendte tilbake, istedenfor å gå mot Jeroboam.

Thus saith Jehovah, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house; for this thing is of me. So they hearkened unto the words of Jehovah, and returned from going against Jeroboam.

5 Rehabeam ble boende i Jerusalem, og han bygde byer til forsvar i Juda.

And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem, and built cities for defence in Judah.

6 Han bygde Betlehem, Etam og Tekoa,

He built Beth-lehem, and Etam, and Tekoa,

7 Bet-Sur, Soko og Adullam,

And Beth-zur, and Soco, and Adullam,

8 Gat, Maresja og Zif,

and Gath, and Mareshah, and Ziph,

9 Adoraim, Lakisj og Azeka,

and Adoraim, and Lachish, and Azekah,

10 Sora, Ajalon og Hebron, som ligger i Juda og Benjamin, befestede byer.

and Zorah, and Aijalon, and Hebron, which are in Judah and in Benjamin, fortified cities.

11 Han styrket festningene og satte kommandanter der, samt forsyninger av mat, olje og vin.

And he fortified the strongholds, and put captains in them, and stores of victuals, and oil and wine.

12 I hver by satte han skjold og spyd og gjorde dem meget sterke. Og Juda og Benjamin tilhørte ham.

And in every city `he put' shields and spears, and made them exceeding strong. And Judah and Benjamin belonged to him.

13 Prestene og levittene som var i hele Israel, kom til ham fra alle grensene sine.

And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel resorted to him out of all their border.

14 For levittene forlot sine landområder og eiendommer og kom til Juda og Jerusalem, fordi Jeroboam og hans sønner drev dem bort fra å utføre prestetjenesten for Herren.

For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession, and came to Judah and Jerusalem: for Jeroboam and his sons cast them off, that they should not execute the priest's office unto Jehovah;

15 Og han utnevnte prester for offerhaugene og for bukkene og kalvene som han hadde laget.

and he appointed him priests for the high places, and for the he-goats, and for the calves which he had made.

16 Etter dem kom alle som i sitt hjerte hadde bestemt seg for å søke Herren, Israels Gud, til Jerusalem for å ofre til Herren, sine fedres Gud.

And after them, out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek Jehovah, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto Jehovah, the God of their fathers.

17 De styrket da Judas rike og gjorde Rehabeam, Salomos sønn, sterk i tre år, for de vandret tre år på Davids og Salomos vei.

So they strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong, three years; for they walked three years in the way of David and Solomon.

18 Rehabeam tok til seg en hustru, Mahalath, datteren til Jerimot, Davids sønn, og Abihajil, datteren til Eliab, Isais sønn.

And Rehoboam took him a wife, Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David, `and of' Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;

19 Hun fødte ham sønnene Jeusj, Sjemarja og Zaham.

and she bare him sons: Jeush, and Shemariah, and Zaham.

And after her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom; and she bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith.

And Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines: (for he took eighteen wives, and threescore concubines, and begat twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters.)

22 Rehabeam utnevnte Abia, sønnen til Ma'aka, til å være høvding, ja, leder blant sine brødre, fordi han hadde til hensikt å gjøre ham til konge.

And Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah to be chief, `even' the prince among his brethren; for `he was minded' to make him king.

23 Han handlet klokt og spredte sine sønner rundt om i alle Judas og Benjamins land, til hver befestet by, og ga dem rikelig med forsyninger. Og han søkte mange hustruer for dem.

And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his sons throughout all the lands of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fortified city: and he gave them victuals in abundance. And he sought `for them' many wives.
