1 I det tredje året av Hosea, sønn av Ela, kongen av Israel, begynte Hiskia, sønn av Akas, kongen av Juda, å regjere.

Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

2 Han var tjuefem år gammel da han begynte å regjere, og han regjerte i tjuefem år i Jerusalem. Hans mor het Abi, datter av Sakarja.

Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.

3 Han gjorde det som var rett i Herrens øyne, slik som David, hans far, hadde gjort.

And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, according to all that David his father had done.

4 Han fjernet offerhaugene, knuste steinstøttene og hogg ned Asjera. Han knuste også den kobberslangen som Moses hadde laget, for inntil da hadde israelittene brent røkelse til den; den ble kalt Nehusjtan.

He removed the high places, and brake the pillars, and cut down the Asherah: and he brake in pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made; for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan.

5 Han stolte på Herren, Israels Gud. Etter ham var det ingen som ham blant alle kongene i Juda, heller ikke blant dem som var før ham.

He trusted in Jehovah, the God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor `among them' that were before him.

6 Han holdt fast ved Herren; han vek ikke fra å følge ham, men holdt hans bud, som Herren hadde gitt Moses.

For he clave to Jehovah; he departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which Jehovah commanded Moses.

7 Herren var med ham; hvor han enn dro ut, hadde han framgang. Han gjorde opprør mot kongen av Assyria og tjente ham ikke.

And Jehovah was with him; whithersoever he went forth he prospered: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

8 Han slo filisterne helt til Gaza og grensene der, fra vakttårnet til den befestede byen.

He smote the Philistines unto Gaza and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

9 I det fjerde året av kong Hiskia, som var det syvende året av Hosea, sønn av Ela, kongen av Israel, kom Salmanassar, kongen av Assyria, opp mot Samaria og beleiret det.

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.

10 Etter tre år inntok de byen; i det sjette året av Hiskia, som var det niende året av Hosea, kongen av Israel, ble Samaria inntatt.

And at the end of three years they took it: in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

11 Kongen av Assyria førte Israel i eksil til Assyria, og satte dem i Halah, ved elven Habor, elven Gozan, og i medernes byer.

And the king of Assyria carried Israel away unto Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,

12 For de hadde ikke adlydt Herrens, deres Guds, røst, men overtrådt hans pakt, alt det Moses, Herrens tjener, hadde befalt, og ville ikke høre eller gjøre det.

because they obeyed not the voice of Jehovah their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of Jehovah commanded, and would not hear it, nor do it.

13 I det fjortende året av kong Hiskia kom Sankerib, kongen av Assyria, opp mot alle de befestede byene i Juda og tok dem.

Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.

14 Hiskia, kongen av Juda, sendte bud til kongen av Assyria i Lakisj og sa: Jeg har syndet. Så trekk deg bort fra meg; jeg vil bære det du legger på meg. Kongen av Assyria påla Hiskia, kongen av Juda, tre hundre talenter sølv og tretti talenter gull.

And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

15 Hiskia ga ham alt sølvet som ble funnet i Herrens hus og i skattkammeret i kongens hus.

And Hezekiah gave `him' all the silver that was found in the house of Jehovah, and in the treasures of the king's house.

16 På den tiden skar Hiskia av gullet på dørene i Herrens tempel og på søylene som han selv hadde belagt med gull, og ga det til kongen av Assyria.

At that time did Hezekiah cut off `the gold from' the doors of the temple of Jehovah, and `from' the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

17 Kongen av Assyria sendte Tartan, Rab-Saris og Rabshake fra Lakisj til kong Hiskia med en stor hær til Jerusalem. De dro opp og kom til Jerusalem, og da de kom opp, stilte de seg ved vannledningen fra den øvre dammen, som ligger ved veien til blekervollen.

And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rab-saris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army unto Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field.

18 Da de ropte til kongen, gikk Eljakim, sønn av Hilkia, som var over hoffet, og skriveren Sjebna og Joah, sønn av Asaf, historieskriveren, ut til dem.

And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebnah the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

19 Rabshake sa til dem: Si nå til Hiskia: Så sier den store kongen, Assyrias konge: Hva er det for en tillit du har?

And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

20 Du sier (men det er tomme ord): 'Det er råd og styrke til krigen.' Hvem stoler du på siden du har gjort opprør mot meg?

Thou sayest (but they are but vain words), `There is' counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou hast rebelled against me?

21 Se, du stoler på denne brukne rørstaven, på Egypt. Hvis en mann lener seg til den, vil den trenge inn i hånden hans og stikke den. Slik er farao, kongen av Egypt, for alle som stoler på ham.

Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

22 Men hvis dere sier til meg: 'Vi stoler på Herren, vår Gud,' er det ikke han hvis offersteder og alter Hiskia har fjernet og sagt til Juda og Jerusalem: 'Dere skal tilbe foran dette alteret i Jerusalem'?

But if ye say unto me, We trust in Jehovah our God; is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

23 Gjør nå en avtale med min herre, kongen av Assyria, så skal jeg gi deg to tusen hester, hvis du makter å sette ryttere på dem.

Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

24 Hvordan kan du da ta imot en øverste av de minste tjenerne til min herre og sette din lit til Egypt for vogner og ryttere?

How then canst thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

25 Har jeg nå kommet opp uten Herren mot dette stedet for å ødelegge det? Herren sa til meg: Gå opp mot dette landet og ødelegg det.

Am I now come up without Jehovah against this place to destroy it? Jehovah said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

26 Da sa Eljakim, Hilkias sønn, og Sjebna og Joah til Rabshake: Tal til dine tjenere på arameisk, for vi forstår det, og tal ikke til oss på jødenes språk, mens folket som er på muren hører det.

Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not with us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

27 Men Rabshake sa til dem: Har min herre sendt meg til din herre og til deg for å tale disse ordene? Har han ikke sendt meg til mennene som sitter på muren, for å spise sin egen avføring og drikke sitt eget vann sammen med dere?

But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? `hath he' not `sent me' to the men that sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own water with you?

28 Rabshake stod og ropte med høy røst på jødenes språk og talte og sa: Hør det store kongens, Assyrias konges, ord.

Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear ye the word of the great king, the king of Assyria.

29 Så sier kongen: La ikke Hiskia bedra dere, for han vil ikke kunne fri dere ut av min hånd.

Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you out of his hand:

30 Og la ikke Hiskia få dere til å stole på Herren ved å si: Herren vil visselig fri oss ut, og denne byen skal ikke gis i Assyrias konges hånd.

neither let Hezekiah make you trust in Jehovah, saying, Jehovah will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

31 Lytt ikke til Hiskia. Så sier Assyrias konge: Gjør fred med meg og kom ut til meg, så skal dere spise av hver sin vinstokk og hver sitt fikentre og drikke vann fra hver sin brønn,

Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;

32 til jeg kommer og tar dere med til et land som er likt deres eget land, et land med korn og ny vin, et land med brød og vinmarker, et land med oliventrær og honning, så dere kan leve og ikke dø. Lytt ikke til Hiskia når han overtaler dere og sier: Herren vil fri oss ut.

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive-trees and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, Jehovah will deliver us.

33 Har noen av gudene til nasjonene noensinne friet sitt land ut av Assyrias konges hånd?

Hath any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

34 Hvor er gudene til Hamat og Arpad? Hvor er gudene til Sefarvaim, Hena og Ivvah? Har de friet Samaria ut av min hånd?

Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

35 Hvem blant alle gudene i landene har friet sitt land ut av min hånd, så Herren skulle fri Jerusalem ut av min hånd?

Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

36 Men folket tidde og svarte ham ikke ett ord, for kongens befaling var: Svar ham ikke.

But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

37 Da kom Eljakim, sønn av Hilkia, som var over hoffet, og skriveren Sjebna og Joah, sønn av Asaf, historieskriveren, til Hiskia med klærne sine flerret, og de fortalte ham Rabshakehs ord.

Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
