Verse 1

Why does the Almighty not reserve times of judgment, and why do those who know Him not see His days of justice?

Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?

Verse 2

People remove landmarks; they seize flocks and pasture them.

Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed thereof.

Verse 3

They drive away the orphan’s donkey and take the widow’s ox as security.

They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.

Verse 4

They turn the needy off the path, and the poor of the land are forced to hide together.

They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.

Verse 5

Like wild donkeys in the wilderness, they go out for their work diligently seeking prey; the steppe provides food for their children.

Behold, as wild asses in the desert, go they forth to their work; rising betimes for a prey: the wilderness yieldeth food for them and for their children.

Verse 6

In the fields, they reap the fodder; they glean the vineyard of the wicked.

They reap every one his corn in the field: and they gather the vintage of the wicked.

Verse 7

They spend the night naked without clothing, having no covering in the cold.

They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.

Verse 8

They are drenched by the mountain rains and embrace the rocks for lack of shelter.

They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.

Verse 9

They snatch the orphan from the breast and take the poor as a pledge.

They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor.

Verse 10

They go about naked without clothing, and they carry sheaves while hungry.

They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the sheaf from the hungry;

Verse 11

They press oil between the rows, they tread the wine presses, yet they go thirsty.

Which make oil within their walls, and tread their winepresses, and suffer thirst.

Verse 12

From the city, the dying groan, and the life of the wounded cries out, but God does not regard their folly.

Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out: yet God layeth not folly to them.

Verse 13

They are among those who rebel against the light; they do not recognize its ways nor stay on its paths.

They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof.

Verse 14

At daybreak, the murderer rises to kill the poor and needy, and at night, he is like a thief.

The murderer rising with the light killeth the poor and needy, and in the night is as a thief.

Verse 15

The adulterer waits for twilight, saying, 'No one will see me,' and he disguises his face.

The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguiseth his face.

Verse 16

In the darkness, they break into houses, but by day, they shut themselves in; they do not know the light.

In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.

Verse 17

For to them, the morning is like deep darkness; they are familiar with the terrors of the shadow of death.

For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one know them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

Verse 18

Swift upon the surface of the waters they are; their portion is cursed in the land; they do not turn to the way of the vineyards.

He is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards.

Verse 19

As drought and heat consume the snow waters, so Sheol consumes those who have sinned.

Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so doth the grave those which have sinned.

Verse 20

The womb forgets them; worms feast upon them; they are no longer remembered. Wickedness is broken like a tree.

The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered; and wickedness shall be broken as a tree.

Verse 21

He preys on the barren woman who does not bear children, and he does no good to the widow.

He evil entreateth the barren that beareth not: and doeth not good to the widow.

Verse 22

Yet God drags away the mighty with His power; though they rise up, they do not trust in their own lives.

He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.

Verse 23

He allows them to rest in security, but His eyes are on their ways.

Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways.

Verse 24

They are exalted for a little while, but then they are gone; they are brought low and gathered up like all others, and like the heads of grain, they are cut off.

They are exalted for a little while, but are gone and brought low; they are taken out of the way as all other, and cut off as the tops of the ears of corn.

Verse 25

If this is not so, who can prove me a liar and make my words nothing?

And if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?
