Verse 1

For the director of music. A contemplative psalm of the sons of Korah.

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.

Verse 2

O God, we have heard with our ears; our ancestors have recounted to us the deeds You performed in their days, in the times of old.

How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

Verse 3

It was by Your hand that You drove out the nations and planted our ancestors. You afflicted the peoples and sent them away.

For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.

Verse 4

For they did not take possession of the land by their sword, nor did their own arm save them. But it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your face, because You were pleased with them.

Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.

Verse 5

You are my King, O God; command victories for Jacob.

Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

Verse 6

Through You we will push back our adversaries; in Your name we will trample those who rise against us.

For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.

Verse 7

For I do not trust in my bow, nor does my sword save me.

But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.

Verse 8

But You have saved us from our adversaries, and You have put to shame those who hate us.

In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.

Verse 9

In God we make our boast all day long, and we will give thanks to Your name forever. Selah.

But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.

Verse 10

Yet You have rejected and humiliated us, and You no longer go out with our armies.

Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.

Verse 11

You make us retreat before the enemy, and those who hate us have plundered us for themselves.

Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.

Verse 12

You delivered us like sheep to be eaten and have scattered us among the nations.

Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

Verse 13

You sold Your people for nothing and made no profit from their sale.

Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.

Verse 14

You have made us a reproach to our neighbors, a mockery and derision to those around us.

Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.

Verse 15

You have made us a byword among the nations, a shaking of heads among the peoples.

My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,

Verse 16

All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered my face.

For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.

Verse 17

This is from the taunts of those who insult and revile, from the presence of the enemy and the avenger.

All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

Verse 18

All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten You, nor have we been false to Your covenant.

Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;

Verse 19

Our hearts have not turned back, nor have our steps strayed from Your path.

Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.

Verse 20

You have crushed us in the place of jackals and covered us with deep darkness.

If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;

Verse 21

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

Verse 22

would God not have discovered this? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

Verse 23

Yet for Your sake we face death all day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.

Verse 24

Awake, Lord! Why do You sleep? Rouse Yourself; do not reject us forever.

Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?

Verse 25

Why do You hide Your face and forget our misery and oppression?

For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.

Verse 26

Our soul has sunk into the dust; our body clings to the earth.

Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

Verse 27

Rise up and help us; redeem us because of Your unfailing love.
