1 Den som tror at Jesus er Kristus, er født av Gud. Og den som elsker Faderen, elsker også barnet som er født av ham.

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Whoever loves the father also loves the child who is born of him.

2 På dette kjenner vi at vi elsker Guds barn, når vi elsker Gud og holder hans bud.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments.

3 For å elske Gud er å holde hans bud. Hans bud er ikke tunge å bære.

For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous.

4 For alt som er født av Gud, overvinner verden. Det er den troen som har seiret over verden.

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith.

5 Hvem er det som overvinner verden, om ikke den som tror at Jesus er Guds Sønn?

Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

6 Dette er han som kom med vann og blod, Jesus Kristus; ikke bare med vann, men med vann og blod. Og Ånden vitner, for Ånden er sannheten.

This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.

7 For det er tre som vitner:

For there are three who testify{Only a few recent manuscripts add "in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that testify on earth"}:

8 Ånden, vannet og blodet; og de tre samstemmer.

the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and the three agree as one.

9 Hvis vi godtar menneskers vitnesbyrd, er Guds vitnesbyrd større. For dette er Guds vitnesbyrd, som han har gitt om sin Sønn.

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is God's testimony which he has testified concerning his Son.

10 Den som tror på Guds Sønn, har vitnesbyrdet i seg selv. Den som ikke tror Gud, har gjort ham til en løgner, fordi han ikke har trodd på vitnesbyrdet Gud har gitt om sin Sønn.

He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who doesn't believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son.

11 Vitnesbyrdet er dette: Gud har gitt oss evig liv, og dette liv er i hans Sønn.

The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

12 Den som har Sønnen, har livet. Den som ikke har Guds Sønn, har ikke livet.

He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn't have God's Son doesn't have the life.

13 Dette har jeg skrevet til dere som tror på Guds Sønns navn, for at dere skal vite at dere har evig liv, og for at dere skal fortsette å tro på Guds Sønns navn.

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

14 Dette er den tillit vi har til ham, at hvis vi ber om noe i samsvar med hans vilje, hører han oss.

This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us.

15 Og hvis vi vet at han hører oss, hva vi enn ber om, da vet vi at vi har det som vi har bedt ham om.

And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.

16 Hvis noen ser sin bror begå en synd som ikke fører til døden, skal han be, og Gud vil gi ham liv, til dem som synder men ikke fører til døden. Det er en synd som fører til døden; jeg sier ikke at han skal be for den.

If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life for those who sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death. I don't say that he should make a request concerning this.

17 All urett er synd, og det finnes en synd som ikke fører til døden.

All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death.

18 Vi vet at hver den som er født av Gud, ikke synder. Men den som er født av Gud, holder seg selv, og den onde rører ham ikke.

We know that whoever is born of God doesn't sin, but he who was born of God keeps himself, and the evil one doesn't touch him.

19 Vi vet at vi er av Gud, og hele verden ligger i det ondes makt.

We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20 Vi vet at Guds Sønn er kommet og har gitt oss forstand, så vi kan kjenne den sanne. Og vi er i den sanne, i hans Sønn, Jesus Kristus. Han er den sanne Gud og evige liv.

We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

21 Mine kjære barn, hold dere borte fra avgudene.

Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
