1 Herren sendte Natan til David. Han kom til ham og sa: «Det var to menn i en by, den ene rik og den andre fattig.

Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

2 Den rike mannen hadde svært mange flokker og hjorder,

The rich man had very many flocks and herds,

3 men den fattige mannen hadde ingenting annet enn et lite hunlam som han hadde kjøpt og oppdratt. Det vokste opp sammen med ham og hans barn. Det spiste av hans mat, drakk av hans kopp og lå ved hans barm; det var som en datter for ham.

but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter.

4 En reisende kom til den rike mannen, og han ville ikke ta av sin egen flokk eller hjord for å tilberede et måltid for den reisende som hadde kommet til ham, men tok det fattige mannens lam og tilberedte det for mannen som hadde kommet til ham.»

A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man who had come to him."

5 Da ble David voldsomt sint på mannen og sa til Natan: «Så sant Herren lever, den mannen som gjorde dette, fortjener å dø!

David's anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, "As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die!

6 Han skal gi lammet tilbake fire ganger, fordi han gjorde dette og ikke viste medfølelse!»

He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!"

7 Natan sa da til David: «Du er mannen. Slik sier Herren, Israels Gud: 'Jeg salvet deg til konge over Israel, og jeg befridde deg fra Sauls hånd.

Nathan said to David, "You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

8 Jeg ga deg din herres hus og din herres hustruer i din favn, og jeg ga deg Israels og Judas hus; og om det var for lite, ville jeg ha gitt deg mye mer.

I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things.

9 Hvorfor har du foraktet Herrens ord og gjort det som er ondt i hans øyne? Du har slått Uria hetitten med sverdet, tatt hans hustru til din hustru og drept ham med ammonittenes sverd.

Why have you despised the word of Yahweh, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

10 Nå skal derfor sverdet aldri vike fra ditt hus, fordi du har foraktet meg og tatt Urias hustru til din hustru.'

Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.'

11 Slik sier Herren: 'Se, jeg lar ulykke reise seg mot deg fra ditt eget hus; jeg skal ta dine hustruer, foran dine øyne, og gi dem til din nabo, og han skal ligge med dine hustruer i denne solens skinn.

This is what Yahweh says: 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

12 For du gjorde det i hemmelighet, men jeg vil gjøre dette i all Israels nærvær og for solens øyne.'»

For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.'"

13 Da sa David til Natan: «Jeg har syndet mot Herren.» Natan sa til David: «Herren har også tatt bort din synd. Du skal ikke dø.

David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against Yahweh." Nathan said to David, "Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die.

14 Men fordi du ved denne gjerningen har gitt Herrens fiender stor anledning til å spotte, skal barnet som er født til deg, sannelig dø.»

However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh's enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die."

15 Natan dro deretter hjem. Herren slo det barnet som Urias hustru hadde født David, og det ble svært sykt.

Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah's wife bore to David, and it was very sick.

16 David ba derfor til Gud for barnet; han fastet og lå natten igjennom på jorden.

David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth.

17 De eldste i hans hus reiste seg og sto ved hans side for å reise ham opp fra jorden, men han ville ikke; heller ikke spiste han brød med dem.

The elders of his house arose, [and stood] beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

18 På den syvende dagen skjedde det at barnet døde. Davids tjenere våget ikke å fortelle ham at barnet var dødt, for de sa: Da barnet enda levde, snakket vi til ham, men han lyttet ikke til oss; hvordan kan vi da fortelle ham at barnet er dødt? Han kunne skade seg selv.

It happened on the seventh day, that the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn't listen to our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

19 Men da David så at hans tjenere hvisket til hverandre, forstod han at barnet var dødt. David sa til sine tjenere: «Er barnet dødt?» De svarte: «Ja, det er dødt.»

But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, Is the child dead? They said, He is dead.

20 Da reiste David seg fra jorden, vasket seg og salvet seg, skiftet klær og gikk inn i Herrens hus og tilba. Deretter kom han til sitt hus, og da han ba om det, satte de fram mat for ham, og han spiste.

Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into the house of Yahweh, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate.

21 Tjenerne hans sa til ham: «Hva er det for noe du har gjort? Mens barnet levde, fastet og gråt du for det; men da barnet var dødt, stod du opp og spiste.»

Then said his servants to him, What thing is this that you have done? you did fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, you did rise and eat bread.

22 Han svarte: «Mens barnet enda levde, fastet og gråt jeg, for jeg tenkte: Hvem vet, kanskje Herren vil vise nåde mot meg, så barnet får leve.

He said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?

23 Men nå er det dødt, hvorfor skulle jeg faste? Kan jeg bringe det tilbake igjen? Jeg skal gå til det, men det kommer ikke tilbake til meg.»

But now he is dead, why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

24 David trøstet Batseba, sin hustru, og gikk inn til henne og lå med henne. Hun fødte en sønn, og han kalte ham Salomo. Herren elsket ham;

David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her: and she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him;

25 og han sendte ved profeten Natan, og han kalte ham Jedidja, for Herrens skyld.

and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh's sake.

26 Joab kjempet nå mot Rabba hos Ammons barn og tok den kongelige byen.

Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

27 Joab sendte bud til David og sa: «Jeg har kjempet mot Rabba og har tatt vannbyen.

Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah; yes, I have taken the city of waters.

28 Samle nå resten av folket, slå leir mot byen og ta den; ellers vil jeg ta byen, og den vil bli kalt etter mitt navn.»

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

29 David samlet alt folket og dro til Rabba, kjempet mot den og tok den.

David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

30 Han tok kongens krone fra hodet hans, og vekten av den var en talent gull, og den hadde edelstener. Den ble satt på Davids hode. Han førte ut byttet fra byen, i stor mengde.

He took the crown of their king from off his head; and the weight of it was a talent of gold, and [in it were] precious stones; and it was set on David's head. He brought forth the spoil of the city, exceeding much.

31 Han førte utfolket som var der, og satte dem til å bruke sager, jernharver og jernøkser, og fikk dem til å arbeide ved mursteinsovnen. Slik gjorde han med alle Ammons barns byer. Så vendte David og hele folket tilbake til Jerusalem.

He brought forth the people who were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln: and thus did he to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
