1 Det skjedde da kongen bodde i sitt hus, og Herren hadde gitt ham fred fra alle hans fiender rundt omkring,

It happened, when the king lived in his house, and Yahweh had given him rest from all his enemies round about,

2 at kongen sa til profeten Natan: Se nå, jeg bor i et hus av sedertre, men Guds ark bor under teltduker.

that the king said to Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains.

3 Natan sa til kongen: Gå, gjør alt som ligger på ditt hjerte, for Herren er med deg.

Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart; for Yahweh is with you.

4 Samme natt kom Herrens ord til Natan og sa:

It happened the same night, that the word of Yahweh came to Nathan, saying,

5 Gå og si til min tjener David: Så sier Herren: Skal du bygge meg et hus til å bo i?

Go and tell my servant David, Thus says Yahweh, Shall you build me a house for me to dwell in?

6 Fra den dag jeg førte Israels barn opp fra Egypt og til i dag, har jeg ikke bodd i et hus, men vandret omkring i et telt, ja, i et tabernakel.

for I have not lived in a house since the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tent.

7 I alle steder hvor jeg har vandret blant Israels barn, har jeg aldri sagt et ord til noen av Israels stammer, som jeg befalte å være hyrde over mitt folk Israel: Hvorfor har dere ikke bygget meg et hus av sedertre?

In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, spoke I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedar?

8 Nå skal du således si til min tjener David: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Jeg tok deg fra beitemarkene, fra å følge sauene, for at du skulle være fyrste over mitt folk, Israel.

Now therefore thus shall you tell my servant David, Thus says Yahweh of Hosts, I took you from the sheep pen, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people, over Israel;

9 Jeg har vært med deg hvor du enn har gått, og har ryddet alle dine fiender ut foran deg; og jeg vil gjøre ditt navn stort, som navnet til de største på jorden.

and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.

10 Jeg vil berede et sted for mitt folk Israel, og vil plante dem, så de kan bo på sitt eget sted og ikke mer bli forstyrret; heller ikke skal ondskapen plage dem mer som før,

I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first,

11 og fra den dagen jeg satte dommere over mitt folk Israel; og jeg vil gi deg fred fra alle dine fiender. Herren forkynner også for deg at Herren vil bygge deg et hus.

and [as] from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Moreover Yahweh tells you that Yahweh will make you a house.

12 Når dine dager er til ende, og du hviler med dine fedre, vil jeg oppreise din ætt etter deg, som skal utgå fra ditt liv, og jeg vil grunnfeste hans rike.

When your days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who shall proceed out of your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 Han skal bygge et hus for mitt navn, og jeg vil sette hans kongedømmes trone fast for evig.

He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

14 Jeg vil være hans far, og han skal være min sønn: Hvis han gjør urett, vil jeg tukte ham med menneskers ris og med plager fra menneskers barn;

I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;

15 men min miskunnhet skal ikke vike fra ham, som jeg tok den fra Saul, som jeg avsatte for deg.

but my loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.

16 Ditt hus og ditt rike skal bestå for evig for ditt åsyn; din trone skal være grunnfestet for evighet.

Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before you: your throne shall be established forever.

17 I samsvar med alle disse ord og i samsvar med hele denne åpenbaring talte Natan til David.

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak to David.

18 Da gikk kong David inn, og satte seg foran Herren, og sa: Hvem er jeg, Herre Gud, og hva er mitt hus, at du har ført meg så langt?

Then David the king went in, and sat before Yahweh; and he said, Who am I, Lord Yahweh, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?

19 Dette var enda for lite i dine øyne, Herre Gud; men du har også talt om din tjeners hus for lang tid fremover; og dette etter menneskelige forhold, Herre Gud!

This was yet a small thing in your eyes, Lord Yahweh; but you have spoken also of your servant's house for a great while to come; and this [too] after the manner of men, Lord Yahweh!

20 Hva mer kan David si til deg? For du kjenner din tjener, Herre Gud.

What can David say more to you? for you know your servant, Lord Yahweh.

21 For ditt ords skyld, og etter ditt eget hjerte, har du gjort all denne store gjerningen, for å gjøre din tjener kjent med den.

For your word's sake, and according to your own heart, have you worked all this greatness, to make your servant know it.

22 Derfor er du stor, Herre Gud: for det er ingen som deg, det er ingen Gud foruten deg, i henhold til alt vi har hørt med våre ører.

Therefore you are great, Yahweh God: for there is none like you, neither is there any God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

23 Hvilket folk på jorden er som ditt folk, som Israel, som Gud gikk for å forløse til seg selv som et folk, og for å gjøre seg et navn, og for å gjøre store og skremmende ting for ditt land, foran ditt folk, som du forløste for deg selv fra Egypt, [fra] folkene og deres guder?

What one nation in the earth is like your people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, and to make him a name, and to do great things for you, and awesome things for your land, before your people, whom you redeem to you out of Egypt, [from] the nations and their gods?

24 Du har opprettet ditt folk Israel til å være et folk for deg for evig; og du, Herre, ble deres Gud.

You did establish to yourself your people Israel to be a people to you forever; and you, Yahweh, became their God.

25 Nå, Herre Gud, ordet som du har talt om din tjener og om hans hus, stadfeste det for evig, og gjør som du har talt.

Now, Yahweh God, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant, and concerning his house, confirm you it forever, and do as you have spoken.

26 La ditt navn bli opphøyd for evig, og si: Herren, hærskarenes Gud, er Gud over Israel; og din tjeners Davids hus skal være grunnfestet foran deg.

Let your name be magnified forever, saying, Yahweh of hosts is God over Israel; and the house of your servant David shall be established before you.

27 For du, Herre, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, har åpenbart det for din tjener og sagt: Jeg vil bygge deg et hus: derfor har din tjener funnet mot i sitt hjerte til å be denne bønn til deg.

For you, Yahweh of Hosts, the God of Israel, have revealed to your servant, saying, I will build you a house: therefore has your servant found in his heart to pray this prayer to you.

28 Nå, Herre Gud, du er Gud, og dine ord er sannhet, og du har lovet denne gode ting til din tjener:

Now, O Lord Yahweh, you are God, and your words are truth, and you have promised this good thing to your servant:

29 la det nå behage deg å velsigne din tjeners hus, så det kan bestå for evig foran deg; for du, Herre Gud, har talt det: og med din velsignelse skal din tjeners hus bli velsignet for evig.

now therefore let it please you to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you; for you, Lord Yahweh, have spoken it: and with your blessing let the house of your servant be blessed forever.
