1 Himlene og jorden var fullført, med hele deres hærskare.

The heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2 På den syvende dagen fullførte Gud arbeidet sitt som han hadde gjort; og han hvilte på den syvende dagen fra hele sitt arbeid som han hadde gjort.

On the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 Gud velsignet den syvende dagen og gjorde den hellig, fordi han hvilte på den fra alt sitt arbeid som han hadde skapt og gjort.

God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work which he had created and made.

4 Dette er historien om himlenes og jordens generasjoner da de ble skapt, den dagen Herren Gud gjorde jorden og himmelen.

This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh God made earth and the heavens.

5 Ingen planter på marken var enda på jorden, og ingen urter på marken hadde enda grodd frem; for Herren Gud hadde ikke latt det regne på jorden. Det fantes ingen mann til å dyrke jorden,

No plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain on the earth. There was not a man to till the ground,

6 men en tåke steg opp fra jorden og vannet hele markens overflate.

but a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground.

7 Herren Gud formet mennesket av jordens støv og blåste livets pust inn i neseborene hans; og mennesket ble en levende sjel.

Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

8 Herren Gud plantet en hage østover, i Eden, og der satte han mannen som han hadde formet.

Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.

9 Fra jorden lot Herren Gud alle slags trær vokse, behagelige å se på og gode å spise av; livets tre var også midt i hagen, og treet til kunnskap om godt og ondt.

Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10 En elv gikk ut fra Eden for å vanne hagen; derfra delte den seg og ble til fire elver.

A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became four heads.

11 Navnet på den første er Pishon: det er den som renner gjennom hele landet Havilah, hvor det er gull;

The name of the first is Pishon: this is the one which flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

12 og gullet i det landet er godt. Der finnes aromatisk harpiks og onyksstein.

and the gold of that land is good. There is aromatic resin and the onyx stone.

13 Navnet på den andre elven er Gihon: det er den samme elven som renner gjennom hele landet Kush.

The name of the second river is Gihon: the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush.

14 Navnet på den tredje elven er Hiddekel: det er den som renner foran Assyria. Den fjerde elven er Eufrat.

The name of the third river is Hiddekel: this is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 Herren Gud tok mannen og satte ham i Edens hage til å dyrke og ta vare på den.

Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16 Herren Gud gav mannen en befaling og sa: "Du kan fritt spise av alle trærne i hagen;

Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat:

17 men av treet til kunnskap om godt og ondt skal du ikke spise, for den dagen du spiser av det, skal du dø."

but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die."

18 Herren Gud sa: "Det er ikke godt for mannen å være alene; jeg vil lage en hjelper som passer for ham."

Yahweh God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him."

19 Fra jorden formet Herren Gud hvert dyr på marken og hver fugl under himmelen, og han førte dem til mannen for å se hva han ville kalle dem. Hvert levende vesen mannen kalte det, det ble dets navn.

Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.

20 Mannen ga navn til alt storfe, til fuglene under himmelen og til hvert dyr på marken; men for ham selv ble det ikke funnet noen hjelper som passet for ham.

The man gave names to all cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper suitable for him.

21 Herren Gud lot en dyp søvn falle på mannen, og han sov; Gud tok en av ribbeina hans og lukket kjøttet igjen i stedet.

Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.

22 Av ribben som Herren Gud hadde tatt fra mannen, skapte han en kvinne og førte henne til mannen.

He made the rib, which Yahweh God had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man.

23 Mannen sa: "Dette er nå ben av mine ben, og kjøtt av mitt kjøtt. Hun skal kalles kvinne, fordi hun ble tatt ut av mannen."

The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man."

24 Derfor skal en mann forlate sin far og sin mor og holde seg til sin kone, og de skal være ett kjød.

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

25 Begge var nakne, mannen og hans kone, og de skammet seg ikke.

They were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
