Himmelriket er som en mann som var husets herre, som tidlig om morgenen dro ut for å leie arbeidere til vingården sin.

"For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who was the master of a household, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

Da han hadde avtalt med arbeiderne om en denar for dagen, sendte han dem til vingården.

When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius{A denarius is a silver Roman coin worth 1/25th of a Roman aureus. This was a common wage for a day of farm labor.} a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

Han gikk ut omkring den tredje time og så andre stå ledige på torget.

He went out about the third hour,{Time was measured from sunrise to sunset, so the third hour would be about 9:00 AM.} and saw others standing idle in the marketplace.

Han sa til dem: 'Gå også dere til vingården, og jeg vil gi dere det som er rett.' Så gikk de.

To them he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went their way.

Igjen gikk han ut omkring den sjette og niende time og gjorde likedan.

Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour,{noon and 3:00 P. M.} and did likewise.

Omkring den ellevte time gikk han ut og fant andre stå ledige. Han sa til dem: 'Hvorfor står dere her hele dagen uten arbeid?'

About the eleventh hour{5:00 PM} he went out, and found others standing idle. He said to them, 'Why do you stand here all day idle?'

De svarte: 'Fordi ingen har leid oss.' Han sa til dem: 'Gå også dere til vingården, og dere skal få det som er rett.'

"They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' "He said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is right.'

Da kvelden kom, sa vingårdens herre til forvalteren sin: 'Kall inn arbeiderne og betal dem deres lønn. Begynn med de siste og deretter de første.'

When evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.'

"When those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius.

Da de første kom, trodde de at de skulle få mer, men også de fikk hver en denar.

When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise each received a denarius.

Da de hadde mottatt den, klaget de mot husets herre.

When they received it, they murmured against the master of the household,

De sa: 'Disse siste har bare arbeidet en time, og likevel har du gjort dem like med oss som har båret dagens byrde og hete.'

saying, 'These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat!'

Men han svarte en av dem: 'Venn, jeg gjør deg ingen urett. Ble vi ikke enige om en denar?

"But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Didn't you agree with me for a denarius?

Ta det som er ditt, og gå. Jeg vil gi denne siste like mye som deg.

Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you.

Har jeg ikke lov til å gjøre som jeg vil med det som er mitt? Eller er øynene dine vonde fordi jeg er god?'

Isn't it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?'

So the last will be first, and the first last. For many are called, but few are chosen."

Da Jesus var på vei opp til Jerusalem, tok han de tolv disiplene til side og sa til dem:

As Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them,

"Se, vi går opp til Jerusalem, og Menneskesønnen skal bli overgitt til overprestene og de skriftlærde, og de skal dømme ham til døden.

"Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,

De skal overgi ham til hedningene for å bli spottet, pisket og korsfestet; og på den tredje dagen skal han bli oppreist."

and will hand him over to the Gentiles to mock, to scourge, and to crucify; and the third day he will be raised up."

Så kom moren til Sebedeus' sønner til ham med sine sønner, og knelte og bad om noe fra ham.

Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, kneeling and asking a certain thing of him.

Han sa til henne: "Hva ønsker du?" Hun sa til ham: "Si at disse mine to sønner skal sitte, den ene ved din høyre hånd og den andre ved din venstre i ditt rike."

He said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Command that these, my two sons, may sit, one on your right hand, and one on your left hand, in your Kingdom."

Men Jesus svarte: "Dere vet ikke hva dere ber om. Kan dere drikke det begeret som jeg er i ferd med å drikke, og bli døpt med den dåpen jeg blir døpt med?" De sa til ham: "Det kan vi."

But Jesus answered, "You don't know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They said to him, "We are able."

Han sa til dem: "Mitt beger skal dere sannelig drikke, og med den dåpen jeg blir døpt med, skal dere døpes, men å sitte ved min høyre og venstre hånd er ikke mitt å gi; det gis til dem det er beredt av min Far."

He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it is for whom it has been prepared by my Father."

Da de ti hørte dette, ble de harme på de to brødrene.

When the ten heard it, they were indignant with the two brothers.

Men Jesus kalte dem til seg og sa: "Dere vet at folkenes fyrster hersker over dem, og de store har myndighet over dem.

But Jesus summoned them, and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

Slik skal det ikke være blant dere. Men den som vil bli stor blant dere, skal være deres tjener.

It shall not be so among you, but whoever desires to become great among you shall be{TR reads "let him be" instead of "shall be"} your servant.

Den som vil være den første blant dere, skal være deres slave,

Whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant,

lik Menneskesønnen, som ikke kom for å la seg tjene, men for selv å tjene og gi sitt liv som løsepenge for mange."

even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Da de gikk ut fra Jeriko, fulgte mye folk med ham.

As they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

To blinde menn som satt ved veien, ropte da de hørte at Jesus gikk forbi: "Herre, miskunn deg over oss, du Davids sønn!"

Behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!"

Folkemengden truet dem for å få dem til å tie, men de ropte bare enda høyere: "Herre, miskunn deg over oss, du Davids sønn!"

The multitude rebuked them, telling them that they should be quiet, but they cried out even more, "Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!"

Jesus stood still, and called them, and asked, "What do you want me to do for you?"

De svarte: "Herre, at øynene våre må åpnes."

They told him, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened."

Jesus ble rørt av medlidenhet, rørte ved øynene deres, og straks fikk de synet tilbake og fulgte ham.

Jesus, being moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes received their sight, and they followed him.
