I de dager kom døperen Johannes og forkynte i ødemarken i Judea,

In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,

og sa: «Omvend dere, for himmelriket er nær!»

"Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!"

For han er den det er talt om gjennom profeten Jesaja, som sier: «Røsten av en som roper i ødemarken: Gjør Herrens vei klar, gjør hans stier rette.»

For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight."

Johannes bar klær av kamelhår og hadde et lærbelte om livet. Hans mat var gresshopper og vill honning.

Now John himself wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.

Da dro folk fra Jerusalem, hele Judea, og hele området rundt Jordan ut til ham.

Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.

De ble døpt av ham i Jordan, og bekjente sine synder.

They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

Men da han så mange av fariseerne og saddukeerne komme for å bli døpt, sa han til dem: «Ormeyngel, hvem har advart dere mot å flykte fra den kommende vrede?

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Bær derfor frukt som er omvendelsen verdig!

Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance!

Og tro ikke at dere kan si ved dere selv: 'Vi har Abraham til far,' for jeg sier dere at Gud kan reise opp barn til Abraham av disse steinene.

Don't think to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

Allerede ligger øksen ved roten av trærne. Derfor blir hvert tre som ikke bærer god frukt hogd ned og kastet på ilden.

"Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

Jeg døper dere med vann til omvendelse, men han som kommer etter meg er mektigere enn jeg, og jeg er ikke verdig til å bære skoene hans. Han skal døpe dere med Den Hellige Ånd.

I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.{TR and NU add "and with fire"}

Han har kasteskovlen i hånden, og han skal rense treskeplassen grundig og samle hveten i låven, men agnene skal han brenne med en uutslettelig ild.»

His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."

Da kom Jesus fra Galilea til Jordan til Johannes for å bli døpt av ham.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

Men Johannes ville hindre ham, og sa: «Jeg trenger å bli døpt av deg, og du kommer til meg?»

But John would have hindered him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?"

Men Jesus svarte ham: «La det skje nå, for vi skal oppfylle all rettferdighet på denne måten.» Da lot han det skje.

But Jesus, answering, said to him, "Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.

Jesus, da han var blitt døpt, steg straks opp av vannet; og se, himlene ble åpnet for ham. Han så Guds Ånd komme ned som en due og komme over ham.

Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.

Og se, en stemme fra himlene sa: «Dette er min elskede Sønn, i ham har jeg min glede.»

Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
