1 Herren talte til Moses og sa,

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

2 Send menn ut for å speide landet Kanaan, som jeg gir til Israels barn: fra hver av fedrenes stammer skal du sende en mann, hver en høvding blant dem.

Send you men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall you send a man, everyone a prince among them.

3 Moses sendte dem fra ørkenen i Paran etter Herrens befaling: alle var ledere blant Israels barn.

Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Yahweh: all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel.

4 Dette er navnene deres: Fra Rubens stamme, Shammua, sønn av Sakkur.

These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.

5 Fra Simeons stamme, Sjafat, sønn av Hori.

Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

6 Fra Judas stamme, Kaleb, sønn av Jefunne.

Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

7 Fra Isakars stamme, Jigal, sønn av Josef.

Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.

8 Fra Efraims stamme, Hosea, sønn av Nun.

Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun.

9 Fra Benjamins stamme, Palti, sønn av Rafu.

Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.

10 Fra Sebulons stamme, Gaddiel, sønn av Sodi.

Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

11 Fra Josef, spesielt fra Manasses stamme, Gaddi, sønn av Susi.

Of the tribe of Joseph, [namely], of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.

12 Fra Dans stamme, Ammiel, sønn av Gemalli.

Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.

13 Fra Asjers stamme, Setur, sønn av Mikael.

Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.

14 Fra Naftalis stamme, Nahbi, sønn av Vofsi.

Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.

15 Fra Gads stamme, Geuel, sønn av Maki.

Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

16 Dette er navnene på mennene Moses sendte for å speide landet. Moses kalte Hosea, sønn av Nun, Josva.

These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

17 Moses sendte dem for å utforske Kanaans land og sa til dem: Dra opp her fra sør, og gå opp til fjellområdet.

Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill-country:

18 Se på landet, hvordan det er, og folket som bor der, om de er sterke eller svake, få eller mange.

and see the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

19 Se også hvilket land de bor i, om det er godt eller dårlig; og hvilke byer de bor i, om de bor i leirer eller befestninger.

and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

20 Og hvordan landet er, om det er fruktbart eller goldt, om det finnes trær eller ikke. Vær modige og ta med litt av landets frukt. Det var nemlig tiden for de første modne druer.

and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.

21 Så dro de opp og speidet landet fra ørkenen i Sin til Rehob ved inngangen til Hamat.

So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath.

22 De dro opp gjennom sør og kom til Hebron, hvor Akiman, Sesjai og Talmai, Anakittenes barn, bodde. (Hebron ble bygd sju år før Soan i Egypt.)

They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)

23 De kom til Eskols dal og kuttet av en gren med en klase druer, og de bar den på en stang mellom to; de tok også med granatepler og fiken.

They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two; [they brought] also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.

24 Denen dalen fikk navnet Eskols dal på grunn av druene Israels barn kuttet av der.

That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there.

25 Etter førti dager vendte de tilbake fra å ha speidet landet.

They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days.

26 De gikk og kom til Moses og Aron og hele Israels menighet i ørkenen i Paran, i Kadesj, og ga dem akt på hvordan det stod til og viste hele menigheten landets frukt.

They went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and shown them the fruit of the land.

27 De fortalte og sa: Vi kom til landet du sendte oss til; og det flyter i sannhet med melk og honning. Her er frukten fra det.

They told him, and said, We came to the land where you sent us; and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

28 Men folket som bor i landet, er sterke, og byene er befestet og meget store; og dessuten så vi Anaks barn der.

However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified, [and] very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

29 Amalekittene bor i landområdet mot sør; hetittene, jebusittene og amorittene bor i fjellområdet; og kanaanittene bor ved havet og langs elven Jordan.

Amalek dwells in the land of the South: and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the hill-country; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.

30 Kaleb roet folket foran Moses og sa: La oss dra opp med én gang og innta det, for vi har styrken til å overvinne det.

Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

31 Men mennene som hadde gått opp med ham, sa: Vi kan ikke dra opp mot folket, for de er sterkere enn oss.

But the men who went up with him said, We aren't able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

32 De brakte et dårlig rykte om landet de hadde utforsket til Israels barn og sa: Landet vi dro gjennom for å utforske, er et land som fortærer innbyggerne; og alle menneskene vi så der, er menn av stor størrelse.

They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants of it; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature.

33 Der så vi også Nephilim, Anaks sønner, som kommer fra Nephilim, og vi var som gresshopper i våre egne øyne, og det var vi også i deres øyne.

There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
