1 Men om tider og årstider, brødre, har dere ikke behov for at jeg skriver til dere.

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

2 For dere vet selv godt at Herrens dag kommer som en tyv om natten.

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

3 For når de sier: 'Fred og trygghet,' da kommer plutselig ødeleggelse over dem, som veer over en kvinne med barn, og de skal ikke unnslippe.

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

4 Men dere, brødre, er ikke i mørket, slik at dagen skulle komme over dere som en tyv.

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

5 Dere er alle lysets barn og dagens barn; vi hører ikke natten eller mørket til.

Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

6 Derfor, la oss ikke sove som de andre, men la oss våke og være edru.

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

7 For de som sover, sover om natten; og de som drikker seg fulle, er fulle om natten.

For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

8 Men la oss, som tilhører dagen, være edru, iført troens og kjærlighetens brystplate, og som hjelm, håpet om frelsen.

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

9 For Gud har ikke bestemt oss til vrede, men til å oppnå frelse ved vår Herre Jesus Kristus,

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 som døde for oss, slik at vi, enten vi våker eller sover, skal leve sammen med ham.

Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11 Derfor, oppmuntre hverandre og oppbygg hverandre, slik som dere også gjør.

Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12 Og vi ber dere, brødre, å anerkjenne dem som arbeider blant dere, og som er satt over dere i Herren, og formaner dere,

And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13 og å verdsette dem høyt i kjærlighet for deres arbeids skyld. Lev i fred med hverandre.

And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Nå formaner vi dere, brødre: Advar de uordentlige, trøst de motløse, støtt de svake, vær tålmodige mot alle.

Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

15 Se til at ingen gir igjen ondt for ondt til noen, men følg alltid det gode, både innbyrdes og mot alle.

See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

16 Gled dere alltid.

Rejoice evermore.

17 Be uten opphold.

Pray without ceasing.

18 Gi takk for alt, for dette er Guds vilje i Kristus Jesus for dere.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19 Slokk ikke Ånden.

Quench not the Spirit.

20 Forakt ikke profetier.

Despise not prophesyings.

21 Prøv alt, hold fast på det gode.

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

22 Unngå alt som har skinn av onde.

Abstain from all appearance of evil.

23 Og må fredens Gud hellige dere fullstendig; og jeg ber om at hele deres ånd, sjel og kropp blir bevart skyldfrie ved vår Herre Jesu Kristi komme.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Trofast er Han som kaller dere, som også vil gjøre det.

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

25 Brødre, be for oss.

Brethren, pray for us.

26 Hils alle brødrene med et hellig kyss.

Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

27 Jeg ber dere ved Herren at dette brevet blir lest for alle de hellige brødrene.

I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

28 Vår Herre Jesu Kristi nåde være med dere. Amen. Det første brevet til tessalonikerne ble skrevet fra Aten.
