1 En læresang av Etan, esrahitten. Jeg vil synge om Herrens godhet for alltid; med min munn vil jeg gjøre din trofasthet kjent for alle generasjoner.

Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite. I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

2 For jeg har sagt: Nåden skal bygges opp for alltid; din trofasthet skal du befeste i himmelen.

For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.

3 Jeg har inngått en pakt med min utvalgte, jeg har sverget til David, min tjener:

I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

4 Din ætt vil jeg opprette for alltid, og bygge din trone for alle generasjoner. Sela.

Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.

5 Himlene skal lovprise dine under, Herre, og din trofasthet skal loves i de helliges menighet.

And the heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints.

6 For hvem i himlene kan sammenlignes med Herren? Hvem blant de mektige kan liknes med Herren?

For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?

7 Gud blir fryktet høyt i de helliges forsamling, og æret av alle omkring ham.

God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.

8 Herre, hærskarenes Gud, hvem er mektig som du, Herre? Og din trofasthet omgir deg.

O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?

9 Du hersker over havets opprør; når bølgene reiser seg, stiller du dem.

Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou stillest them.

10 Du har knust Rahab som en som er drept; du har spredt dine fiender med din sterke arm.

Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

11 Himlene er dine, jorden er også din; verden og alt som fyller den, har du grunnlagt.

The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

12 Nord og sør har du skapt; Tabor og Hermon jubler i ditt navn.

The north and the south thou hast created them: Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name.

13 Du har en mektig arm; sterk er din hånd, og din høyre hånd er løftet høyt.

Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.

14 Rettferdighet og rett er ditt trones grunnvoll; nåde og sannhet går foran ditt ansikt.

Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.

15 Salig er det folk som kjenner gledesropet; de skal vandre, Herre, i lyset fra ditt ansikt.

Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.

16 I ditt navn skal de glede seg hele dagen; i din rettferdighet skal de opphøyes.

In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.

17 For du er deres styrkes herlighet; med ditt velvilje skal vårt horn opphøyes.

For thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our horn shall be exalted.

18 For Herren er vårt vern; Israels Hellige er vår konge.

For the LORD is our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

19 Da talte du i et syn til din hellige og sa: Jeg har gitt hjelp til en som er mektig; jeg har opphøyet en utvalgt blant folket.

Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.

20 Jeg har funnet David, min tjener; med min hellige olje har jeg salvet ham.

I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:

21 Med ham skal min hånd være fast; ja, min arm skal styrke ham.

With whom my hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.

22 Fienden skal ikke overvinne ham; ondskapens sønner skal ikke plage ham.

The enemy shall not exact upon him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him.

23 Jeg vil slå ned hans fiender foran ham og slå dem som hater ham.

And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.

24 Men min trofasthet og min nåde skal være med ham; i mitt navn skal hans horn opphøyes.

But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

25 Jeg vil legge hans hånd i havet og hans høyre hånd i elvene.

I will set his hand also in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.

26 Han skal rope til meg: Du er min far, min Gud og frelsens klippe for meg.

He shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.

27 Også vil jeg gjøre ham til min førstefødte, den høyeste blant kongene på jorden.

Also I will make him my firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.

28 Min nåde vil jeg bevare for ham for evig, og min pakt skal stå fast med ham.

My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with him.

29 Hans ætt vil jeg la vare for alltid, og hans trone som himmelens dager.

His seed also will I make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.

30 Hvis hans barn forlater min lov og ikke følger mine påbud,

If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;

31 hvis de bryter mine forskrifter og ikke holder mine bud,

If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;

32 da vil jeg tukte deres overtredelser med stokk, og deres urett med slag.

Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

33 Men min kjærlighet vil jeg ikke ta helt bort fra ham, og min trofasthet vil ikke svikte.

Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

34 Min pakt vil jeg ikke bryte, og jeg vil ikke endre det som har gått ut fra mine lepper.

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my li.

35 Én gang har jeg sverget ved min hellighet: Jeg vil ikke lyve for David.

Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.

36 Hans ætt skal vare evig, og hans trone som solen foran meg.

His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.

37 Den skal stå fast for evig som månen, som et trofast vitne i himmelen. Sela.

It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.

38 Men du har forkastet og avskydd ham; du har vært vred på din salvede.

But thou hast cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with thine anointed.

39 Du har brutt din tjeners pakt; du har vanæret hans krone ved å kaste den til jorden.

Thou hast made void the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

40 Du har brutt ned alle hans murer; du har gjort hans festninger til ruiner.

Thou hast broken down all his hedges; thou hast brought his strong holds to ruin.

41 Alle som går forbi på veien, plyndrer ham; han er blitt en skam blant naboene.

All that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.

42 Du har hevet hans motstanders høyre hånd; du har gledet alle hans fiender.

Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.

43 Du har også vendt bort kanten av hans sverd og latt ham ikke seire i striden.

Thou hast also turned the edge of his sword, and hast not made him to stand in the battle.

44 Du har fått hans glans til å opphøre, og kastet hans trone til jorden.

Thou hast made his glory to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.

45 Du har forkortet hans unge dager; du har dekket ham med skam. Sela.

The days of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.

46 Hvor lenge, Herre? Vil du skjule deg for alltid? Skal din vrede brenne som ild?

How long, LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?

47 Husk hvor kort min levetid er; hvorfor har du skapt alle mennesker for ingenting?

Remember how short my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men in vain?

48 Hvem er den mann som lever og ikke skal se døden? Kan han redde sin sjel fra gravens makt? Sela.

What man is he that liveth, and shall not see death? shall he deliver his soul from the hand of the grave? Selah.

49 Herre, hvor er din tidligere kjærlighet, som du sverget til David i din trofasthet?

Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, which thou swarest unto David in thy truth?

50 Husk, Herre, vanæren for dine tjenere; hvordan jeg bærer spott fra de mange folkeslag i mitt hjerte;

Remember, Lord, the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of all the mighty people;

51 Noe som dine fiender har hånt, Herre; noe som de har hånt din salvedes fotspor.

Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD; wherewith they have reproached the footste of thine anointed.

52 Velsignet være Herren for evig. Amen og amen.
