Verse 1

Now these are the ones who came to David at Ziklag, while he kept himself hidden because of Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.

And of the Gadites there came to David at the stronghold in the wilderness, mighty men of valor, men of war ready for battle, who could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the gazelles upon the mountains;

Verse 14

These were from the sons of Gad, captains of the army: the least of them was a match for a hundred men, and the greatest for a thousand.

These are the ones who crossed over Jordan in the first month, when it had overflowed all its banks; and they put to flight all those in the valleys, to the east and to the west.

Then some of the children of Benjamin and Judah came to David at the stronghold.

And David went out to meet them, and said to them, If you have come peacefully to help me, my heart shall be united with you; but if you have come to betray me to my enemies, since there is no wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers see and judge.

And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.

Verse 18

Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said, We are yours, O David, and we are on your side, son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to your helpers, for your God helps you. So David received them, and made them captains of the band.

Verse 19

And some from Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to battle against Saul; but they did not help them, for the lords of the Philistines, upon advisement, sent him away, saying, He may defect to his master Saul, to the jeopardy of our heads.

And there fell some of Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.

Verse 20

As he went to Ziklag, some from Manasseh joined him: Adnah, Jozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of thousands from Manasseh.

As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of Manasseh.

Verse 21

And they helped David against the band of raiders, for they were all mighty men of valor, and they were captains in the army.

And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.

Verse 22

For day by day men came to David to help him, until it was a great army, like the army of God.

For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.

Verse 23

Now these are the numbers of the divisions that were ready for war, and came to David at Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the LORD.

Verse 24

The sons of Judah bearing shield and spear were six thousand and eight hundred armed for war.

Verse 25

Of the sons of Simeon, mighty men of valor for war, seven thousand and one hundred.

Verse 27

Jehoiada was the leader of the Aaronites, and with him were three thousand and seven hundred;

And Zadok, a young man mighty of valor, and his father's house, twenty-two captains.

Verse 29

Of the sons of Benjamin, the relatives of Saul, three thousand; for until that time, the most of them had maintained their allegiance to the house of Saul.

Verse 30

Of the sons of Ephraim twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valor, famous throughout their father's house.

Verse 31

Of the half-tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, who were recognized by name to come and make David king.

Of the sons of Issachar, men who understood the times, to know what Israel ought to do, their chiefs were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.

Verse 33

Of Zebulun, those who went out to battle, skilled in war with all kinds of weapons, fifty thousand who could keep ranks; they were not of double heart.

Verse 34

Of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them thirty-seven thousand with shield and spear.

Verse 35

Of the Danites, those skilled in war, twenty-eight thousand and six hundred.

And of the Danites expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred.

Verse 36

Of Asher, those who went out to battle, skilled in war, forty thousand.

And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand.

Verse 37

On the other side of the Jordan, of the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all types of weapons of war for battle, one hundred and twenty thousand.

And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.

Verse 38

All these men of war, who could keep ranks, came with a perfect heart to Hebron to make David king over all Israel; and all the rest of Israel were of one heart to make David king.

Verse 39

They were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brethren had prepared for them.

Verse 40

Moreover, those who were near them, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys, camels, mules, and oxen; provisions of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, wine and oil, oxen and sheep in abundance, for there was joy in Israel.
