Verse 1

And it happened that as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

Verse 2

And he said to them, When you pray, say, Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.

Verse 3

Give us day by day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

And he said to them, Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves;

For a friend of mine on his journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?

Verse 7

And he from within shall answer and say, Do not trouble me: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give you.

And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.

Verse 8

I say to you, Though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

Verse 9

And I say to you, Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.

Verse 10

For everyone who asks receives; and he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks it shall be opened.

For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Verse 11

If a son asks bread from any of you who is a father, will you give him a stone? or if he asks for a fish, will you give him a serpent instead of a fish?

If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

Verse 12

Or if he asks for an egg, will you offer him a scorpion?

Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

Verse 13

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Verse 14

And he was casting out a demon, and it was mute. And it happened when the demon had gone out, the mute spoke; and the people wondered.

And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

Verse 15

But some of them said, He casts out demons through Beelzebub the chief of the demons.

But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.

Verse 16

And others, tempting him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

Verse 17

But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falls.

Verse 18

If Satan also is divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because you say I cast out demons through Beelzebub.

Verse 19

And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore they will be your judges.

And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

Verse 20

But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, no doubt the kingdom of God has come upon you.

But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

Verse 21

When a strong man, armed, guards his palace, his goods are in peace:

When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:

Verse 22

But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils.

But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

Verse 23

He who is not with me is against me: and he who does not gather with me scatters.

He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

Verse 24

When the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, I will return to my house from which I came.

Verse 25

And when he comes, he finds it swept and cleaned.

And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.

Verse 26

Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

Verse 27

And it happened, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which you have nursed.

And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

Verse 28

But he said, On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

Verse 29

And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and no sign shall be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet.

Verse 30

For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also shall the Son of Man be to this generation.

Verse 31

The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

Verse 33

No one, when he has lit a candle, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a candlestick, that those who come in may see the light.

No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.

Verse 34

The light of the body is the eye: therefore when your eye is good, your whole body is full of light; but when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.

Verse 35

Take heed therefore that the light which is in you is not darkness.

Verse 36

If your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle gives you light.

If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

Verse 37

And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee asked him to dine with him: and he went in and sat down to eat.

And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.

Verse 38

And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed before dinner.

Verse 39

And the Lord said to him, Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness.

And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

Verse 40

Fools, did not he who made the outside make the inside also?

Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?

Verse 41

But rather give alms of such things as you have; and behold, all things are clean to you.

Verse 42

But woe to you, Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and every kind of herb, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.

But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Verse 43

Woe to you, Pharisees! for you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the markets.

Verse 44

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.

Verse 45

Then one of the lawyers answered and said to him, Teacher, by saying this you reproach us also.

Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.

Verse 46

And he said, Woe to you also, lawyers! for you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

Verse 47

Woe to you! for you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

Verse 48

Truly you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs.

Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

Verse 49

Therefore the wisdom of God also said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall kill and persecute:

That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;

Woe to you, lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.

Verse 53

And as he said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:
