Verse 13

You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Verse 15

Neither do men light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

Verse 16

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Verse 17

Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets: I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Verse 18

For truly I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or one tittle will by any means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

Verse 21

You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder,' and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment:

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

Verse 22

But I say to you, that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whoever says to his brother, 'Raca,' shall be in danger of the council: but whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be in danger of hell fire.

Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

Verse 25

Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are on the way with him, lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, the judge hand you over to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.

Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Verse 29

And if your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you: for it is better for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Verse 30

And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you: for it is better for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Verse 31

Furthermore it has been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce:'

It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

Verse 32

But I say to you, that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

Verse 33

Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord:'

Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No': for whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Verse 38

You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth:'

Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

Verse 39

But I say to you, do not resist an evil person: but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Verse 43

You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'

Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

Verse 44

But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you;

But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Verse 45

That you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Verse 46

For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Verse 47

And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?

And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

Verse 48

Therefore be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
