Da Samuel ble gammel, gjorde han sine sønner til dommere over Israel.

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

Hans førstefødte het Joel, og den andre Abia. De var dommere i Beer-Sheba.

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beer-sheba.

Men hans sønner fulgte ikke i hans fotspor. De var ute etter uærlig vinning, tok bestikkelser og forvrei rettferdigheten.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

Da samlet alle Israels eldste seg og kom til Samuel i Rama.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

Og de sa til ham: «Se, du er gammel, og dine sønner følger ikke dine veier. Nå må du sette en konge over oss som kan dømme oss, slik som alle de andre folkene har.»

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

Men dette ordet mishaget Samuel da de sa: «Gi oss en konge til å dømme oss.» Og Samuel ba til Herren.

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

Herren sa til Samuel: «Lytt til folkets røst i alt de sier til deg, for det er ikke deg de har forkastet, men meg, slik at jeg ikke skal være konge over dem.»

And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Slik de har gjort helt fra den dagen jeg førte dem opp fra Egypt og til denne dag, at de har forlatt meg og tjent andre guder, slik gjør de også mot deg.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

Så lytt nå til deres røst; men advare dem alvorlig og si dem hva slags konge som skal herske over dem.»

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

Samuel fortalte folket som ba ham om en konge, alle Herrens ord.

And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

Og han sa: «Dette vil være kongens oppførsel som skal regjere over dere: Han vil ta sønnene deres og sette dem til sine vogner og gjøre dem til sine ryttere. Noen skal løpe foran hans vogner.

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

Han vil sette noen som førere over tusen, og førere over femti, og sette dem til å pløye hans jord, høste hans korn, lage hans krigsutstyr, og lage hans vogner.

And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

Han vil ta deres døtre til å lage parfymer, til å være kokker, og til å bake.

And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

Han vil ta de beste av deres åkrer, vingårder og oliventrær, og gi dem til sine tjenere.

And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

Han vil ta tiendedelen av deres korn og vingårder og gi til sine embetsmenn og sin hoffstab.

And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

Han vil ta deres tjenere og tjenestepiker, de beste unge menn dere har, og eslene deres og sette dem til å arbeide for seg.

And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

Han vil ta tiendedelen av deres sauer, og dere vil bli hans tjenere.

He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

Dere vil rope ut på den dagen på grunn av den kongen dere har valgt, men Herren vil ikke svare dere den dagen.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

Men folket nektet å høre på Samuel og sa: «Nei, vi vil ha en konge over oss,

Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

slik at vi kan være som alle andre folk, og at vår konge kan dømme oss, lede oss ut og kjempe våre kamper.»

That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

Så hørte Samuel alle folkets ord og gjentok dem for Herren.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

Herren sa til Samuel: «Lytt til deres røst og sett en konge over dem.» Så sa Samuel til Israels menn: «Gå tilbake, hver til sin by.»

And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
