Brothers, I do not want you to be unaware that all our ancestors were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea.

They all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

But God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not desire evil things as they did.

Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, 'The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.'

So then, let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But with the temptation, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

14 Derfor, mine kjære, flykt fra avgudsdyrkelse.

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

15 Jeg taler til dere som til forstandige; døm selv det jeg sier.

I speak to wise people; judge for yourselves what I say.

16 Velsignelsens beger som vi velsigner, er det ikke samfunn med Kristi blod? Brødet som vi bryter, er det ikke samfunn med Kristi kropp?

The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

17 For ett brød, ett legeme, er vi mange; for alle tar vi del i det ene brødet.

Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread.

18 Se på Israel etter kjødet: De som spiser ofrene, har de ikke samfunn med alteret?

Consider the people of Israel. Are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?

19 Hva mener jeg da? At et avgudsoffer er noe? Eller at et idol er noe?

What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or that food sacrificed to idols is anything?

20 Nei, men jeg sier at det som hedningene ofrer, ofrer de til demonene og ikke til Gud. Jeg vil ikke at dere skal være samfunnsfeller med demonene.

No, but what the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to become participants with demons.

21 Dere kan ikke drikke Herrens beger og demoners beger. Dere kan ikke ta del i Herrens bord og demoners bord.

You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot share in the Lord’s table and the table of demons.

22 Eller vil vi vekke Herrens sjalusi? Er vi sterkere enn ham?

Or are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He is?

23 Alt er tillatt, men ikke alt gagner. Alt er tillatt, men ikke alt bygger opp.

Everything is permissible, but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible, but not everything builds up.

24 Ingen skal søke sitt eget, men den andres beste.

No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

25 Alt det som blir solgt på torget, kan dere spise uten å spørre av samvittighetshensyn.

Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience.

26 For jorden og alt som fyller den, hører Herren til.

For the earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.

27 Hvis en av de ikke-troende inviterer dere, og dere vil gå, så spis hva som settes fram uten å spørre av samvittighetshensyn.

If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is placed before you without raising questions of conscience.

But if someone says to you, 'This has been offered in sacrifice,' then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.

I do not mean your own conscience, but that of the other person's. For why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?

If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of what I give thanks for?

31 Enten dere spiser eller drikker, eller hva dere gjør, gjør alt til Guds ære.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks, or the church of God.

Just as I also try to please everyone in all things, not seeking my own benefit but the benefit of many, so that they may be saved.
