As David's final days approached, he commanded his son Solomon, saying:

I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, therefore, and show yourself to be a man.

Obey the charge of the LORD your God by walking in His ways, keeping His statutes, commandments, judgments, and testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses. In this way, you will prosper in all you do and wherever you turn.

And you will ensure that the LORD fulfills His promise to me, saying, 'If your sons are careful to walk before Me in truth with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.'

Moreover, you know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me—how he killed the two commanders of Israel's armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He shed their blood as if in war during a time of peace, staining his belt and sandals with the blood.

Gjør derfor etter din visdom, og la ikke hans grå hår gå med fred ned i dødsriket.

Act according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace.

But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your table, for they supported me when I fled from your brother Absalom.

And behold, you have with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, who cursed me bitterly on the day I went to Mahanaim. When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the LORD that I would not put him to death by the sword.

However, do not consider him innocent. You are a wise man, and you will know what you ought to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood.

Then David rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David.

David reigned over Israel for forty years: seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

Salomo satt på Davids, sin fars trone, og hans kongedømme ble svært etablert.

So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingship was firmly established.

Adonja, Haggits sønn, kom til Batseba, Salomos mor. Hun spurte ham: 'Kommer du med fred?' Han svarte: 'Ja, med fred.'

Now Adonijah, the son of Haggith, came to Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon. She asked, 'Do you come in peace?' And he replied, 'In peace.'

Then he said, 'I have something to say to you.' She replied, 'Speak.'

Han sa: 'Du vet at kongedømmet var mitt, og hele Israel ventet på at jeg skulle bli konge. Men kongedømmet ble tatt fra meg og gitt til min bror, for det var fra Herren.'

He said, 'You know that the kingdom was mine and that all Israel turned their faces to me to make me king. But the kingdom has been transferred and has become my brother's, for it was the LORD's will.'

Nå ber jeg deg om én ting; ikke avvis meg!' Hun svarte: 'Be, og jeg skal ikke avvise deg.'

'Now I have one request to make of you; do not refuse me.' And she said, 'Speak.'

Da sa han: 'Jeg ber deg, si til kong Salomo, for han vil ikke motsi deg, at han gir meg Abisjag fra Sunem til kone.'

He continued, 'Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.'

Batseba svarte: 'Godt, jeg skal tale til kongen for deg.'

'Very well,' Bathsheba replied. 'I will speak to the king for you.'

Så gikk Batseba inn til kong Salomo for å tale for Adonja. Kongen reiste seg og bøyde seg for henne. Deretter satte han seg på sin trone, og sørget for at en trone ble satt for kongens mor. Hun satte seg ved hans høyre hånd.

So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. The king rose to meet her, bowed down to her, and then sat on his throne. He also had a throne placed for the king’s mother, and she sat at his right hand.

She said, 'I have one small request to make of you. Do not refuse me.' The king replied, 'Ask, my mother, for I will not refuse you.'

So she said, 'Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to your brother Adonijah as his wife.'

King Solomon answered his mother, 'Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him—for he is my elder brother—yes, for him and for Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!'

Så sverget kong Salomo ved Herren: 'Måtte Gud gjøre slik mot meg, ja, enda verre, hvis ikke Adonja har talt dette på bekostning av sitt eget liv!'

Then King Solomon took an oath by the LORD: 'May God punish me ever so severely if Adonijah has not made this request at the cost of his own life!

'And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the one who has established me, seated me on the throne of my father David, and made me a dynasty as He promised—Adonijah shall be put to death today!'

Then King Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, who struck down Adonijah, and he died.

Til Abjatar, presten, sa kongen: 'Gå til dine marker i Anatot, for du er verdig til døden, men i dag skal jeg ikke drepe deg, fordi du bar Herrens, min Guds, ark foran min far David, og fordi du delte all den nød som min far bar.'

To Abiathar the priest, the king said, 'Go back to your fields in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not put you to death today because you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David and because you shared in his hardships.'

Så drev Salomo Abjatar bort fra å være prest for Herren, og slik oppfylte han Herrens ord som var talt i profetien mot Elis hus i Sjilo.

So Solomon removed Abiathar from being a priest to the LORD, fulfilling the word the LORD had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli.

Nyheten nådde Joab, som hadde støttet Adonja, selv om han ikke hadde støttet Absalom. Da flyktet Joab til Herrens telt og grep tak i altarhornene.

When the news reached Joab—who had supported Adonijah but not Absalom—he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.

Da ble det rapportert til kong Salomo at Joab hadde flyktet til Herrens telt og var ved alteret. Salomo sendte Benaia, Jojadas sønn, med beskjed om å slå ham i hjel.

It was reported to King Solomon that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was by the altar. So Solomon sent Benaiah son of Jehoiada, saying, 'Go, strike him down!'

Benaia gikk inn i Herrens telt og sa til Joab: 'Kongen sier: Kom ut!' Men Joab svarte: 'Nei, jeg vil dø her.' Benaia kom tilbake til kongen og fortalte hva Joab hadde sagt og hvordan han hadde svart.

When Benaiah reached the tent of the LORD, he said to Joab, 'The king says, “Come out.”' But Joab replied, 'No, I will die here.' So Benaiah went back to the king and reported, 'This is how Joab answered me.'

Kongen sa til ham: 'Gjør som han har sagt! Slå ham i hjel og begrav ham. Fjern det uskyldige blodet som Joab har utgytt, fra meg og min fars hus.'

The king said to him, 'Do as he says. Strike him down and bury him, and so remove from me and my father's house the guilt of the blood that Joab shed without cause.

Herren skal la hans blod komme tilbake på hans eget hode, fordi han drepte to menn som var mer rettferdige og bedre enn han selv, Abner, Ners sønn, hærføreren for Israel, og Amasa, Jeters sønn, hærføreren for Juda, uten at min far David visste om det.

The LORD will bring back his blood on his own head, because he struck down two men more righteous and better than himself—Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel's army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah's army—killing them with the sword without my father David knowing it.

Deres blod skal komme tilbake på Joabs hode og på hans slekt for alltid. Men for David, hans etterkommere, hans hus og hans trone skal det være fred fra Herren for alltid.

Their blood will come back on the head of Joab and his descendants forever, but there will be peace from the LORD forever for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne.

Så gikk Benaia, Jojadas sønn, opp, angrep Joab og drepte ham. Han ble begravet i sitt eget hus i ørkenen.

So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up, struck down Joab, and killed him. He was buried at his house in the wilderness.

Kongen satte Benaia, Jojadas sønn, over hæren i Joabs sted, og Zadok, presten, satte han i stedet for Abjatar.

The king appointed Benaiah son of Jehoiada over the army in Joab’s place, and Zadok the priest in place of Abiathar.

Then the king sent for Shimei and said to him, 'Build a house for yourself in Jerusalem and live here. Do not leave this city to go anywhere else.'

'For on the day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley, you can be sure that you will certainly die. Your blood will be on your own head.'

Sjimi svarte kongen: 'Det er godt, som min herre kongen har sagt, slik skal din tjener gjøre.' Så bodde Sjimi i Jerusalem i mange dager.

Shimei replied to the king, 'Your command is good. Just as my lord the king has said, so your servant will do.' And Shimei stayed in Jerusalem for a long time.

Men etter tre år flyktet to av Sjimis tjenere til Akisj, sønn av Maaka, kongen i Gat. Og noen fortalte Sjimi: 'Se, dine tjenere er i Gat.'

But after three years, two of Shimei's servants ran away to Achish son of Maacah, king of Gath. When Shimei was told, 'Your servants are in Gath,'

Da sto Sjimi opp, salet eselet sitt og dro til Gat til Akisj for å lete etter sine tjenere. Så dro Sjimi og brakte sine tjenere tilbake fra Gat.

he saddled his donkey and went to Achish in Gath to search for them. He brought his servants back from Gath.

When Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and returned,

the king summoned Shimei and said to him, 'Did I not make you swear by the LORD and warn you, “On the day you leave and go anywhere, you can be certain you will die”? And you said to me, “What you say is good; I will obey.”

Hvorfor har du da ikke holdt Herren ed og det budet jeg ga deg?

Why then did you not keep your oath to the LORD and obey the command I gave you?'

Så sa kongen til Sjimi: 'Du vet selv alt det onde som du gjorde mot min far David, og Herren vender din ondskap tilbake på ditt eget hode.'

The king said moreover to Shimei, 'You know in your heart all the evil you did to my father David. The LORD will repay you for your wickedness.'

Men kong Salomo skal være velsignet, og Davids trone skal være fast for Herrens ansikt til evig tid.

'But King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne will remain secure before the LORD forever.'

Så befalte kongen Benaja, Jojadas sønn, og han gikk ut og slo Sjimi i hjel. Riket ble dermed bekreftet i Salomos hånd.

Then the king gave the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei down, and he died. So the kingdom was firmly established in Solomon’s hands.
