So Joseph went and told Pharaoh, 'My father, my brothers, their flocks, their herds, and everything they own have come from the land of Canaan, and they are now in the region of Goshen.'

Joseph selected five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.

Pharaoh asked Joseph’s brothers, 'What is your occupation?' and they replied to Pharaoh, 'Your servants are shepherds, just as our fathers were.'

Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Your father and brothers have come to you.'

'The land of Egypt is before you. Settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land, in Goshen. And if you know any among them who are capable men, appoint them as overseers of my livestock.'

Josef førte sin far Jakob fram for farao, og Jakob velsignet farao.

Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

Pharaoh asked Jacob, 'How many years have you lived?''

Jacob replied to Pharaoh, 'The days of my sojourning have been one hundred thirty years. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not compare to the years of the lives of my fathers during their sojourning.'

Så velsignet Jakob farao, og gikk ut fra hans nærvær.

Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and departed from his presence.

Josef lot sin far og sine brødre bosette seg og ga dem eiendom i Egypt, i den beste delen av landet, i Ramses, som farao hadde befalt.

So Joseph settled his father and brothers, giving them property in the best part of the land in Egypt, in the region of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

Joseph also provided food for his father, his brothers, and all his father’s household according to the number of their children.

There was no food in the entire land because the famine was very severe. The land of Egypt and the land of Canaan wasted away under the pressure of the famine.

Joseph collected all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan in exchange for the grain they were buying, and he brought the money into Pharaoh’s house.

Joseph said, 'Bring your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for them if your money is gone.'

De brakte buskapen sin til Josef, og Josef ga dem brød i bytte mot hester, småfe, storfe og esler. Slik forsørget han dem med brød gjennom det året for all deres buskap.

So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for the horses, the flocks of sheep, the herds of cattle, and the donkeys. He provided them with food in exchange for all their livestock that year.

When that year was over, they came to him the next year and said, 'We cannot hide from our lord that our money is gone and our livestock has been given to you. There is nothing left for our lord but our bodies and our land.'

'Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we will be servants to Pharaoh. Give us seed that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.'

Josef kjøpte hele Egyptens jord for farao, for alle egypterne solgte sine marker, fordi hungersnøden var så sterk mot dem. Landet ble faraos eiendom.

So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians sold their fields, because the famine was severe upon them. The land became Pharaoh’s.

As for the people, he relocated them to the cities, from one end of Egypt's border to the other.

Then Joseph said to the people, 'Now that I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh, here is seed for you to sow in the land.'

Når avlingen er moden, skal dere gi en femtedel til farao, og fire deler skal være til såkorn for åkeren, mat for dere selv og for husstanden deres og for mat til barna deres."

When the harvest comes, you must give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The remaining four parts will be yours as seed for the field, as food for yourselves, for those in your households, and for your children to eat.

De sa: "Du har reddet våre liv. Må vi finne nåde i vår herres øyne, og vi vil være tjenere for farao."

They replied, 'You have saved our lives! May we find favor in the eyes of my lord, and we will be servants to Pharaoh.'

Så satte Josef dette som en lov for Egyptens jord den dag i dag: En femtedel tilhører farao. Jorden til prestene var alene ikke tilhørende farao.

So Joseph established it as a law in Egypt to this day: A fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. Only the land of the priests did not become Pharaoh’s.

Now Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen. They gained property there, were fruitful, and greatly multiplied in number.

Jacob lived in Egypt for seventeen years, and the years of his life were one hundred and forty-seven in total.

When the time of Israel’s death drew near, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, 'If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise to show me steadfast love and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt.'

When I lie down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place.” Joseph answered, 'I will do as you say.'

Jacob said, 'Swear to me.' So Joseph swore to him, and Israel bowed in worship at the head of his bed.
