After these events, someone told Joseph, 'Your father is ill.' So Joseph took his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, with him.

When Jacob was told, 'Your son Joseph is coming to you,' Israel strengthened himself and sat up on the bed.

Jakob sa til Josef: 'Gud Den Allmektige viste seg for meg i Luz i Kanaans land og velsignet meg.

Jacob said to Joseph, 'God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me.'

Han sa til meg: 'Se, jeg vil gjøre deg fruktbar og mangfoldig og gjøre deg til en folkegruppe. Jeg vil gi dette land til din ætt etter deg som en evig eiendom.'

He said to me, 'I am about to make you fruitful and multiply you. I will make you a community of peoples, and I will give this land to your descendants after you as a permanent possession.'

Nå er dine to sønner, som er født for deg i Egypt før jeg kom hit til deg, mine. Efraim og Manasse skal være mine, som Ruben og Simeon.

'Now, your two sons who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you here will be mine. Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, just as Reuben and Simeon are.'

De barn som du får etter dem, skal være dine. De skal regnes sammen med sine brødre i sin arv.

'The children born to you after them will be yours. They will be recorded under the names of their brothers in their inheritance.'

Da jeg kom fra Paddan, døde Rakel for meg i Kanaans land, på veien et stykke fra Efrat. Jeg begravde henne der på veien til Efrat — det er Betlehem.

'As for me, when I was coming from Paddan, Rachel died on me in the land of Canaan, along the way, still some distance from Ephrath. I buried her there on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.'

Da Israel så Josefs sønner, spurte han: 'Hvem er disse?'

When Israel saw Joseph’s sons, he asked, 'Who are these?'

Josef svarte sin far: 'Det er mine sønner, som Gud har gitt meg her.' Og han sa: 'Bring dem til meg, så jeg kan velsigne dem.'

Joseph said to his father, 'They are my sons whom God has given to me here.' Israel said, 'Bring them to me, please, so I may bless them.'

Israels øyne var blitt svake av alderdom, han kunne ikke se. Josef førte dem nær til ham, og han kysset dem og omfavnet dem.

Now Israel’s eyes were failing due to old age—he could not see well. Joseph brought the boys near to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.

Israel sa til Josef: 'Jeg hadde ikke trodd jeg skulle få se ditt ansikt igjen, men nå har Gud også latt meg se din ætt.'

Israel said to Joseph, 'I never expected to see your face again, but now God has even let me see your children.'

Josef tok dem bort fra sine knær og bøyde seg med ansiktet mot jorden.

Joseph removed the boys from Israel’s knees and bowed down with his face to the ground.

Josef tok dem begge, Efraim i sin høyre hånd mot Israels venstre hånd, og Manasse i sin venstre hånd mot Israels høyre hånd, og førte dem nær til ham.

Then Joseph took them both—Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right—and brought them close to him.

Israel rakte ut sin høyre hånd og la den på Efraims hode, som var den yngste, og sin venstre hånd på Manasses hode, og krysset hendene med vitende vilje, selv om Manasse var den førstefødte.

But Israel stretched out his right hand and placed it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger; and crossing his hands, he placed his left hand on Manasseh’s head, even though Manasseh was the firstborn.

Then he blessed Joseph and said, 'The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,'

engelen som har utfridd meg fra alt ondt, han velsigne guttene, og må mitt navn virke i dem, samt navnet til mine fedre, Abraham og Isak, så de må vokse til i mengde midt i jorden.'

'The Angel who redeemed me from all harm, may he bless these boys. May they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac. May they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.'

Da Josef så at hans far la sin høyre hånd på Efraims hode, syntes han det var galt. Han grep sin fars hånd for å flytte den fra Efraims hode til Manasses hode.

When Joseph saw his father placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s.

Josef sa til sin far: 'Ikke slik, far, for dette er den førstefødte. Legg din høyre hånd på hans hode.'

Joseph said to his father, 'No, my father, this one is the firstborn; place your right hand on his head.'

Men faren nektet og sa: 'Jeg vet det, min sønn, jeg vet det. Også han skal bli til et folk, og også han skal bli stor. Men hans yngre bror skal bli større enn han, og hans etterkommere skal bli mange folkeslag.'

But his father refused and said, 'I know, my son, I know. He too will become a people, and he too will be great. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a group of nations.'

Den dagen velsignet han dem og sa: 'Ved deg skal Israel velsigne og si: Gud gjøre deg som Efraim og som Manasse.' Så satte han Efraim foran Manasse.

On that day, he blessed them and said, 'By you, Israel will pronounce this blessing: May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.' So he placed Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

Og Israel sa til Josef: 'Se, jeg dør, men Gud skal være med dere og føre dere tilbake til landet som tilhører deres fedre.'

Then Israel said to Joseph, 'Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you back to the land of your ancestors.'

Til deg gir jeg en del mer enn til dine brødre, den delen jeg tok fra amorittene med mitt sverd og min bue.'

And to you, I give one more portion than your brothers, the portion I took from the Amorites with my sword and bow.
