They took forty days for him, because that is how long the embalming process takes, and the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

When the days of mourning were over, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's household, saying, 'If I have found favor with you, please convey this message to Pharaoh.

'My father made me swear, saying, “I am about to die. Bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now, please let me go and bury my father, and I will return.'

Farao svarte: «Dra opp og begrav din far, som han lot deg sverge.»

Pharaoh replied, 'Go and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.'

Så dro Josef opp for å begrave sin far, og med ham dro faraos tjenere, de eldste i sitt hus, og alle de eldste i landet Egypt.

Joseph went up to bury his father, and all Pharaoh's officials, the elders of his household, and the elders of the land of Egypt went with him.

Og hele Josefs hus, hans brødre, og hans fars hus; bare deres barn, deres flokker og deres kveg lot de være igjen i landet Goshen.

Joseph's entire household, his brothers, and his father's household accompanied him. But they left their children, flocks, and cattle in the land of Goshen.

Both chariots and horsemen went up with him, making it a very large procession.

When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they held a great and solemn lamentation. Joseph observed seven days of mourning for his father.

When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, 'This is a deep mourning for the Egyptians.' Therefore, the place was named Abel Mizraim, which is near the Jordan.

Jacob's sons did for him as he had commanded them.

They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought as a burial site from Ephron the Hittite.

After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all those who had gone up with him to bury his father.

When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, 'What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and repays us for all the evil we did to him?'

So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, 'Before he died, your father gave this command:

'This is what you are to say to Joseph: “Please forgive the transgressions of your brothers and their sin, for they treated you so badly.” Now, please forgive the transgressions of the servants of the God of your father.' Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

Then his brothers also came, bowed down before him, and said, 'We are your servants.'

Men Josef sa til dem: «Frykt ikke! Er jeg i Guds sted?

But Joseph said to them, 'Do not be afraid. Am I in the place of God?'

Det dere tenkte ondt mot meg, har Gud vendt til det gode, for å gjøre det som skjer i dag, å berge et stort folk i live.

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done—the saving of many lives.

Frykt derfor ikke! Jeg vil sørge for dere og deres småbarn.» Slik trøstet han dem og talte vennlig til dem.

'So do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.' And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

Josef ble boende i Egypt, han og hans fars hus. Josef levde i hundre og ti år.

Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with his father's family. He lived to be 110 years old.

Josef så Efraims etterkommere i tredje ledd; også Makirs, Manasses sønns barn, ble født på Josefs knær.

He saw the third generation of Ephraim’s children, and also the children of Machir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph’s knees.

Josef sa til sine brødre: «Jeg skal dø, men Gud vil visselig ta seg av dere og føre dere opp fra dette landet til det landet som han sverget til Abraham, Isak og Jakob.»

Then Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.'

Josef lot Israels sønner sverge og sa: «Gud vil visselig ta seg av dere, og dere skal føre mine ben opp herfra.»

And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, 'God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place.'

Så døde Josef, hundre og ti år gammel, og de balsamerte ham og la ham i en kiste i Egypt.

So Joseph died at the age of 110. After they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
