1 Og hele Israels forsamling kom til ødemarken Sin i den første måneden, og folket bosatte seg i Kadesh. Der døde Mirjam, og hun ble begravet der.

In the first month, the entire community of the Israelites came to the wilderness of Zin, and the people stayed at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.

2 Det var ingen vann til forsamlingen, og de samlet seg mot Moses og Aron.

There was no water for the community, so they gathered together against Moses and Aaron.

3 Folket kranglet med Moses og sa: «Om vi bare hadde dødd da våre brødre døde for Herrens åsyn!

The people quarreled with Moses, saying, "If only we had died when our brothers died before the LORD!

4 Hvorfor har dere ført Herrens forsamling ut i denne ørkenen for å dø her, vi og våre dyr?

Why have you brought the LORD's assembly into this wilderness, for us and our livestock to die here?

5 Hvorfor har dere ført oss opp fra Egypt for å bringe oss til dette onde stedet? Det er ikke et sted for såkorn, ikke fiken, vinranker eller granatepler, og det er ikke vann å drikke.»

Why did you bring us up from Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain, figs, vines, or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink!

6 Moses og Aron gikk bort fra forsamlingen til inngangen av møteteltet og kastet seg ned på ansiktet. Herrens herlighet viste seg for dem.

Moses and Aaron left the assembly and went to the entrance of the tent of meeting. They fell facedown, and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.

7 Herren talte til Moses og sa:

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

8 «Ta staven, og samle forsamlingen, du og Aron, din bror. Tal til klippen foran deres øyne, og den vil gi vann. Du skal få vann ut av klippen for dem, og gi drikke til forsamlingen og deres buskap.»

"Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to the rock in front of them, and it will yield its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community and their livestock to drink."

9 Moses tok staven fra Herrens åsyn, slik han ble beordret.

So Moses took the staff from the LORD's presence, just as he was commanded.

10 Moses og Aron samlet forsamlingen foran klippen. Moses sa til dem: «Hør nå, dere opprørske! Skal vi få vann ut av denne klippen for dere?»

He and Aaron gathered the assembly in front of the rock, and Moses said to them, "Listen now, you rebels! Must we bring water out of this rock for you?"

11 Moses løftet hånden og slo klippen to ganger med staven, og mye vann strømmet ut, og forsamlingen og deres buskap drakk.

Then Moses raised his hand and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water came out abundantly, and the community and their livestock drank.

12 Men Herren sa til Moses og Aron: «Fordi dere ikke trodde på meg og helliget meg for Israels barns øyne, skal dere ikke bringe denne forsamlingen inn i det landet jeg har gitt dem.»

But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe me and treat me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I am giving them."

13 Dette var Meribas vann der Israels barn kranglet med Herren, og han viste seg hellig blant dem.

These were the waters of Meribah, where the Israelites quarreled with the LORD and where he showed himself holy among them.

14 Moses sendte budbringere fra Kadesh til kongen i Edom og sa: «Så sier din bror Israel: Du kjenner all den nød som har rammet oss.

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: "This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardship that has come upon us.

15 Våre fedre dro ned til Egypt, og vi bodde i Egypt i mange dager, og egypterne behandlet oss ille, oss og våre fedre.

Our ancestors went down to Egypt, and we lived there for a long time. But the Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors.

16 Vi ropte til Herren, og han hørte vår røst, sendte en engel og førte oss ut av Egypt. Nå er vi ved Kadesh, en by ved kanten av ditt område.

When we cried out to the LORD, he heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Now we are here at Kadesh, a town on the edge of your territory.

17 La oss få dra gjennom ditt land. Vi skal ikke gå gjennom åker eller vingård, og vi skal ikke drikke brønnvann. Vi vil gå Kongeveien uten å bøye av til høyre eller venstre inntil vi har passert din grense.»

Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through any field or vineyard, nor will we drink water from any well. We will travel along the King's Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.

18 Men Edom svarte ham: «Du skal ikke gå forbi her, ellers kommer jeg ut imot deg med sverdet.»

But Edom answered, "You shall not pass through my land, or I will come out against you with the sword."

19 Israels barn sa til ham: «Vi vil gå opp langs den veien, og om vi drikker ditt vann, jeg og mine buskap, skal jeg betale for det. Det er ikke annet mellom oss enn å få gå gjennom til fots.»

The Israelites replied, "We will travel along the highway, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only ask to pass through on foot."

20 Men han sa: «Du skal ikke passere!» Og Edom gikk ut mot dem med en stor folkemengde og med sterk hånd.

But Edom insisted, "You may not pass through." And Edom came out against them with a large, strong force.

21 Da nektet Edom å tillate Israel å passere gjennom sitt område, og Israel vendte seg bort fra ham.

Since Edom refused to let Israel pass through its territory, Israel turned away from them.

22 De brøt opp fra Kadesh, og Israels barn, hele forsamlingen, kom til fjellet Hor.

The Israelites, the entire community, set out from Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.

23 Herren talte til Moses og Aron ved fjellet Hor, ved grensen til Edoms land, og sa:

At Mount Hor, near the border of Edom, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

24 «Aron skal samles til sitt folk, for han skal ikke komme inn i det landet jeg har gitt til Israels barn, fordi dere var ulydige mot mitt ord ved Meribas vann.

"Aaron will be gathered to his people. He will not enter the land I am giving to the Israelites, because both of you rebelled against my command at the waters of Meribah.

25 Ta Aron og Eleasar, hans sønn, og før dem opp på fjellet Hor.

Take Aaron and his son Eleazar, and bring them up Mount Hor.

26 Klæ Aron av hans klær og ifør Eleasar dem, hans sønn. Aron skal bli samlet til sitt folk og dø der.»

Remove Aaron's garments and put them on his son Eleazar. Aaron will be gathered to his people there and will die."

27 Moses gjorde som Herren befalte. De gikk opp på fjellet Hor for øynene til hele forsamlingen.

Moses did as the LORD commanded. They climbed Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community.

28 Moses tok Arons klær av ham og iførte Eleasar dem, hans sønn. Og Aron døde der på fjelltoppen. Så gikk Moses og Eleasar ned fra fjellet.

Moses removed Aaron's garments and put them on his son Eleazar. And Aaron died there at the top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

29 Da hele forsamlingen så at Aron var død, gråt hele Israels hus over Aron i tretti dager.

When the whole community saw that Aaron had died, they mourned for him thirty days—all the house of Israel.
