Alt har sin tid, og en tid for hver hensikt under himmelen:

For everything there is a season, and a time for very purpose under heaven:

a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

en tid for å lete, og en tid for å miste; en tid for å beholde, og en tid for å kaste bort;

a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

en tid for å rive i stykker, og en tid for å sy; en tid for å være stille, og en tid for å tale;

a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

en tid for å elske, og en tid for å hate; en tid for krig, og en tid for fred.

a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.

Hva har han som arbeider ut av det han strever med?

What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboreth?

Jeg har sett det strevet Gud har gitt menneskene å engasjere seg med.

I have seen the travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith.

Han har gjort alt vakkert i sin tid; også har han lagt evigheten i deres hjerte, likevel kan ikke mennesket forstå det verk Gud har gjort fra begynnelsen til slutten.

He hath made everything beautiful in its time: also he hath set eternity in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God hath done from the beginning even to the end.

Jeg vet at det ikke er noe bedre for dem enn å glede seg og gjøre godt så lenge de lever.

I know that there is nothing better for them, than to rejoice, and to do good so long as they live.

Og også at hver mann kan spise og drikke og nyte det gode i alt sitt arbeid, er en Guds gave.

And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God.

Jeg vet at hva Gud gjør, det skal være for alltid; ingenting kan legges til det, og ingenting kan tas fra det; og Gud har gjort det slik at menneskene skal frykte for ham.

I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it; and God hath done it, that men should fear before him.

Det som er nå har vært før; og det som skal være har vært før; og Gud søker opp igjen det som er forsvunnet.

That which is hath been long ago; and that which is to be hath long ago been: and God seeketh again that which is passed away.

Og videre så jeg under solen, på rettens sted, at ondskap var der; og på rettferdighetens sted, at ondskap var der.

And moreover I saw under the sun, in the place of justice, that wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, that wickedness was there.

For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; and man hath no preeminence above the beasts: for all is vanity.

Alle går til ett sted; alle er av støv, og alle skal bli til støv igjen.

All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

Hvem vet om menneskets ånd går oppover, og dyrets ånd om den går nedover til jorden?

Who knoweth the spirit of man, whether it goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast, whether it goeth downward to the earth?

Derfor så jeg at det ikke er noe bedre enn at mennesket gleder seg i sitt arbeid; for det er hans del: for hvem kan bringe ham tilbake for å se hva som skjer etter ham?

Wherefore I saw that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him `back' to see what shall be after him?
