Now it came to pass, when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

that they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

Da sendte Adoni-Sedek, kongen i Jerusalem, bud til Hoham, kongen i Hebron, Piram, kongen i Jarmut, Jafia, kongen i Lakisj, og Debir, kongen i Eglon, og sa,

Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

«Kom opp til meg og hjelp meg, så vi kan slå Gibeon, for de har sluttet fred med Josva og Israels folk.»

Come up unto me, and help me, and let us smite Gibeon; for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

Da samlet de fem amorittkongene, kongen i Jerusalem, kongen i Hebron, kongen i Jarmut, kongen i Lakisj og kongen i Eglon, seg sammen og dro opp med alle sine hærer, slo leir mot Gibeon og førte krig mot byen.

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.

Men mennene i Gibeon sendte bud til Josva i leiren i Gilgal og sa: «Ikke hold tilbake hjelpen fra dine tjenere; kom opp til oss raskt og redd oss, hjelp oss, for alle amorittkongene som bor i fjellandet har samlet seg mot oss.»

And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying, Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill-country are gathered together against us.

Da dro Josva opp fra Gilgal, han og alle krigsmennene med ham, og alle de sterke mennene.

So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.

Og Herren sa til Josva: «Frykt dem ikke, for jeg har gitt dem i din hånd; ingen av dem skal kunne stå imot deg.»

And Jehovah said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thy hands; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

Josva kom uventet over dem, for han hadde gått opp fra Gilgal hele natten.

Joshua therefore came upon them suddenly; `for' he went up from Gilgal all the night.

Og Herren slo dem i forvirring foran Israel, og han vant en stor seier ved Gibeon, og forfulgte dem langs veien oppover Bet-Horon, og slo dem helt til Aseka og Makeda.

And Jehovah discomfited them before Israel, and he slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

Og det skjedde mens de flyktet fra Israel, mens de var på vei ned til Bet-Horon, at Gud kastet store steiner fra himmelen på dem like til Aseka, slik at de døde. Flere døde av haglsteinene enn de Israels barn drepte med sverdet.

And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, that Jehovah cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

Da talte Josva til Herren den dagen Herren lot amorittene falle i Israels fangenskap, og sa i Israelittenes hørsel: «Sol, stå stille over Gibeon, og du, måne, i Ajalons dal.»

Then spake Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; And thou, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

Og solen stod stille, og månen ble, inntil folket hadde hevnet seg på sine fiender. Er dette ikke skrevet i Jashars bok? Solen ble stående midt på himmelen og skyndte seg ikke å gå ned nesten en hel dag.

And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, Until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jashar? And the sun stayed in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

Det var ingen dag som denne, verken før eller etter, da Herren lyttet til en manns røst, for Herren kjempet for Israel.

And there was no day like that before it or after it, that Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of a man: for Jehovah fought for Israel.

Og Josva vendte tilbake, og hele Israel med ham, til leiren i Gilgal.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

De fem kongene flyktet og gjemte seg i hulen ved Makeda.

And these five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

Det ble meldt til Josva: «De fem kongene er funnet, gjemt i hulen ved Makeda.»

And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.

Da sa Josva: «Rull store steiner foran hulens åpning, og sett menn til å vokte den.

And Joshua said, Roll great stones unto the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them:

Men dere, stans ikke; jag etter fiendene deres, og slå de bakerste av dem. La dem ikke komme inn i sine byer, for Herren deres Gud har gitt dem i deres hånd.»

but stay not ye; pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for Jehovah your God hath delivered them into your hand.

Da Josva og Israels folk var ferdige med å slå dem med en stor nedslakting, inntil de var tilintetgjort, og de som gjensto hadde kommet til de befestede byene,

And it came to pass, when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,

vendte hele folket i fred tilbake til Josva i leiren i Makeda. Ingen våget å røre Israels barn med et ord.

that all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

Josva sa: «Åpne hulens åpning og før de fem kongene ut til meg.»

Then said Joshua, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five kings unto me out of the cave.

Og de gjorde slik, og førte de fem kongene ut av hulen til ham: kongen i Jerusalem, kongen i Hebron, kongen i Jarmut, kongen i Lakisj og kongen i Eglon.

And they did so, and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.

Da de førte kongene ut til Josva, kalte Josva alle Israels menn og sa til lederne for krigerne som hadde gått med ham: «Kom hit og sett foten på nakken til disse kongene.» Og de gikk bort og satte foten på nakken deres.

And it came to pass, when they brought forth those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chiefs of the men of war that went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

Josva sa til dem: «Frykt ikke og mist ikke motet; vær sterke og modige, for slik skal Herren gjøre med alle fiendene dere kjemper mot.»

And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall Jehovah do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Deretter slo Josva dem, drepte dem og hengte dem på fem trær, og de hang på trærne til kvelden.

And afterward Joshua smote them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

Da solen gikk ned, ga Josva befaling, og de tok dem ned fra trærne, kastet dem inn i hulen hvor de hadde gjemt seg, og la store steiner over hulens åpning, som er der til denne dag.

And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, unto this very day.

Samme dag inntok Josva Makeda og slo byen med sverdets egg, sammen med kongen; han utryddet dem fullstendig, og lot ingen overleve; han gjorde mot kongen av Makeda som han hadde gjort mot kongen av Jeriko.

And Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof: he utterly destroyed them and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining; and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

Deretter dro Josva fra Makeda med hele Israel til Libna og kjempet mot Libna.

And Joshua passed from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

Og Herren overga også Libna og kongen der i Israels hånd. Han slo byen med sverdets egg, og utryddet alle innbyggerne; han lot ingen bli tilbake, som han hadde gjort mot kongen av Jeriko.

and Jehovah delivered it also, and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did unto the king thereof as he had done unto the king of Jericho.

Josva dro fra Libna med hele Israel til Lakisj, slo leir der og kjempet mot byen.

And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

Herren overga Lakisj i Israels hånd, og Josva tok byen den andre dagen. Han slo den med sverdets egg, slik han hadde gjort med Libna.

and Jehovah delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

Da kom Horam, kongen av Gezer, for å hjelpe Lakisj, men Josva slo han og folket hans, inntil ingen var igjen.

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

Deretter dro Josva med hele Israel fra Lakisj til Eglon, slo leir der og kjempet mot byen.

And Joshua passed from Lachish, and all Israel with him, unto Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it;

De inntok byen samme dag og slo den med sverdets egg; han utryddet alle innbyggerne, som han hadde gjort med Lakisj.

and they took it on that day, and smote it with the edge of the sword; and all the souls that were therein he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachish.

Josva dro deretter opp med hele Israel fra Eglon til Hebron, og de kjempet mot byen.

And Joshua went up from Eglon, and all Israel with him, unto Hebron; and they fought against it:

De inntok byen og slo den med sverdets egg, kongen og alle byene der, og alle innbyggerne; han lot ingen bli igjen; han utryddet byen fullstendig, som han hadde gjort med Eglon.

and they took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls that were therein.

Josva vendte deretter tilbake med hele Israel til Debir og kjempet mot byen.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to Debir, and fought against it:

Han inntok byen, kongen og alle byene der, og slo dem med sverdets egg, og utryddet alle innbyggerne; han lot ingen bli igjen, som han hadde gjort med Hebron og Libna og deres konger.

and he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to the king thereof.

Så slo Josva hele landet, fjellene i sør, lavlandet og skråningene, og alle kongene der; han lot ingen bli igjen, men utryddet alt som pustet, slik Herren, Israels Gud, hadde befalt.

So Joshua smote all the land, the hill-country, and the South, and the lowland, and the slopes, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, commanded.

Josva slo dem fra Kadesh-Barnea til Gaza, og hele området fra Goshen til Gibeon.

And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.

Josva beseiret alle disse kongene og deres land på en gang, fordi Herren, Israels Gud, kjempet for Israel.

And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because Jehovah, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

Deretter vendte Josva tilbake med hele Israel til leiren i Gilgal.

And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.
