Nehemiah 7

1 When the wall was completed and I had set up the gates, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.

Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,

2 I put my brother Hanani and Hananiah, the commander of the fortress, in charge of Jerusalem, because he was a faithful man who feared God more than most people.

That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.

3 I said to them, 'The gates of Jerusalem should not be opened until the sun is hot. While the guards are still standing watch, let the gates be shut and secured. Also appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post and near his own house.'

And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.

4 The city was spacious and large, but its people were few, and there were no houses built yet.

Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.

5 Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be registered by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had returned first, and this is what I discovered written there:

And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,
