1 Tidlig om morgenen holdt overprestene, sammen med de eldste og de skriftlærde, og hele rådet en konsultasjon. De bandt Jesus, førte ham bort og overga ham til Pilatus.

Immediately in the morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council, held a consultation, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him up to Pilate.

2 Pilatus spurte ham: «Er du jødenes konge?» Han svarte: «Det er som du sier.»

Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered, "So you say."

3 Overprestene anklaget ham for mange ting.

The chief priests accused him of many things.

4 Pilatus spurte ham igjen: «Har du ingen svar? Se hvor mange ting de vitner mot deg!»

Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer? See how many things they testify against you!"

5 Men Jesus svarte ikke mer, noe som forundret Pilatus.

But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate marveled.

6 Nå var det slik at han pleide å frigi en fange for dem ved høytiden, en de ba om.

Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whom they asked of him.

There was one called Barabbas, bound with those who had made insurrection, men who in the insurrection had committed murder.

8 Mengden begynte å rope og be ham gjøre som han pleide for dem.

The multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do as he always did for them.

9 Pilatus svarte dem: «Vil dere at jeg skal løslate jødenes konge for dere?»

Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"

10 For han forsto at det var av misunnelse overprestene hadde overgitt ham.

For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up.

11 Men overprestene hisset opp folkemengden til at han heller skulle løslate Barabbas for dem.

But the chief priests stirred up the multitude, that he should release Barabbas to them instead.

12 Pilatus spurte dem igjen: «Hva skal jeg da gjøre med ham som dere kaller jødenes konge?»

Pilate again asked them, "What then should I do to him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

13 De ropte igjen: «Korsfest ham!»

They cried out again, "Crucify him!"

14 Pilatus sa til dem: «Hvorfor, hva ondt har han gjort?» Men de ropte enda høyere: «Korsfest ham!»

Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they cried out exceedingly, "Crucify him!"

15 For å tilfredsstille folkemengden, løslot Pilatus Barabbas for dem og overga Jesus, etter at han hadde fått ham pisket, til å bli korsfestet.

Pilate, wishing to please the multitude, released Barabbas to them, and handed over Jesus, when he had flogged him, to be crucified.

16 Soldatene førte ham bort innenfor gårdsplassen, som er Pretoriet, og samlet hele kohorten.

The soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they called together the whole cohort.

17 De kledde ham i purpur, og flettet en krone av torner som de satte på ham.

They clothed him with purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him.

18 Så begynte de å hilse ham: «Vær hilset, jødenes konge!»

They began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

19 De slo hodet hans med en stokk, spyttet på ham og bøyde kne for ham i tilbedelse.

They struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him.

20 Da de hadde hånet ham, tok de purpurkappen av ham og kledde ham i hans egne klær. De førte ham ut for å korsfeste ham.

When they had mocked him, they took the purple off of him, and put his own garments on him. They led him out to crucify him.

21 De tvang en forbipasserende, Simon fra Kyrene, far til Alexander og Rufus, som kom inn fra landet, til å bære hans kors.

They compelled one passing by, coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to go with them, that he might bear his cross.

22 De førte ham til stedet som kalles Golgata, som betyr «Hodeskallestedet».

They brought him to the place called Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, "The place of a skull."

23 De tilbød ham vin blandet med myrra, men han tok ikke imot.

They offered him wine mixed with myrrh to drink, but he didn't take it.

24 Da de korsfestet ham, delte de klærne hans og kastet lodd om hva hver skulle få.

Crucifying him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots on them, what each should take.

25 Det var den tredje time, og de korsfestet ham.

It was the third hour,{9:00 A. M.} and they crucified him.

26 Innskriften med anklagene mot ham var skrevet over ham: «JØDENES KONGE».

The superscription of his accusation was written over him, "THE KING OF THE JEWS."

27 Sammen med ham korsfestet de to røvere, en på høyre side og en på venstre.

With him they crucified two robbers; one on his right hand, and one on his left.

28 Skriften ble oppfylt, som sier: «Han ble regnet blant overtredere.»

The Scripture was fulfilled, which says, "He was numbered with transgressors."

29 De som gikk forbi spottet ham, ristet på hodet og sa: «Ha! Du som river ned tempelet og bygger det opp på tre dager,

Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days,

30 frels deg selv, og kom ned fra korset!»

save yourself, and come down from the cross!"

31 På samme måte hånte også overprestene og de skriftlærde blant seg selv: «Han frelste andre; seg selv kan han ikke frelse.

Likewise, also the chief priests mocking among themselves with the scribes said, "He saved others. He can't save himself.

32 La Kristus, Israels konge, nå komme ned fra korset, så vi kan se og tro på ham.» De som var korsfestet sammen med ham, hånte også ham.

Let the Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe him.{TR omits "him"}" Those who were crucified with him insulted him.

33 Da den sjette time kom, falt et mørke over hele landet til den niende time.

When the sixth hour{or, noon} had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.{3:00 PM}

34 Ved den niende time ropte Jesus med høy røst: «Eloi, Eloi, lama sabaktani?» som betyr: «Min Gud, min Gud, hvorfor har du forlatt meg?»

At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is, being interpreted, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

35 Noen av dem som sto der, sa da de hørte det: «Se, han roper på Elia.»

Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, "Behold, he is calling Elijah."

One ran, and filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Let him be. Let's see whether Elijah comes to take him down."

37 Jesus ropte med høy røst, og åndet ut.

Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit.

38 Forhenget i tempelet revnet i to, fra øverst til nederst.

The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.

39 Da offiseren som sto der overfor ham så at han ropte slik og åndet ut, sa han: «Sannelig, denne mannen var Guds Sønn!»

When the centurion, who stood by opposite him, saw that he cried out like this and breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

40 Det var også kvinner der som så på på avstand, blant dem var både Maria Magdalena, Maria, mor til Jakob den yngre og Joses, og Salome.

There were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

41 De hadde fulgt ham og tjent ham da han var i Galilea, og mange andre kvinner som hadde kommet opp til Jerusalem med ham.

who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and served him; and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

42 Da det nå var blitt kveld, fordi det var forberedelsesdagen, det vil si dagen før sabbaten,

When evening had now come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

43 kom Josef fra Arimatea, et fremtredende rådsmedlem som også selv ventet på Guds rike. Han gikk dristig til Pilatus og ba om Jesu kropp.

Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent council member who also himself was looking for the Kingdom of God, came. He boldly went in to Pilate, and asked for Jesus' body.

44 Pilatus undret seg over at han allerede var død; og kalte til seg offiseren og spurte om han hadde vært død lenge.

Pilate marveled if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead long.

45 Da han fikk det bekreftet av offiseren, ga han kroppen til Josef.

When he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46 Josef kjøpte et linklede, tok ham ned, svøpte ham i linkledet og la ham i en grav som var hugget ut i fjellet. Han rullet en stein foran inngangen til graven.

He bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out of a rock. He rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
