There was a man from Ramathaim-Zophim, in the hill country of Ephraim. His name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite.

Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:

He had two wives. The name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other was Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

Year after year, this man would go up from his city to worship and to offer sacrifices to the LORD of Hosts at Shiloh, where Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, served as priests of the LORD.

And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

On the day Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.

And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb.

But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.

Her rival provoked her severely to irritate her because the LORD had closed her womb.

And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.

This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival would provoke her, and she would weep and not eat.

And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

Then her husband Elkanah said to her, 'Hannah, why are you crying? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?'

Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah arose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the temple of the LORD.

So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.

In her deep anguish, Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.

And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

She made a vow, saying, 'LORD of Hosts, if You will indeed look upon the affliction of Your servant and remember me, and not forget Your servant, but give Your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall ever touch his head.'

And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.

And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore, Eli thought she was drunk.

Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

Eli said to her, 'How long will you remain drunk? Put away your wine!'

And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

Hannah answered, 'No, my lord. I am a woman deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD.'

And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

Do not consider your servant a worthless woman. It is out of my great sorrow and distress that I have been speaking until now.'

Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

Then Eli answered, 'Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.'

Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

She said, 'May your servant find favor in your eyes.' Then she went her way, and she ate, and her face was no longer downcast.

And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

Early in the morning, they arose and worshiped before the LORD, and then they returned to their home in Ramah. Elkanah was intimate with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.

And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

In the course of time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, 'Because I asked the LORD for him.'

Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

When Elkanah and all his household went up to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,

And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, 'After the boy is weaned, I will take him to appear before the LORD, and he will remain there permanently.'

But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.

Elkanah her husband said to her, 'Do what seems best to you. Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD establish His word.' So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she weaned him.

And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

After she had weaned him, she took him along with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh. The boy was young.

And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.

They slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli.

And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

She said, 'Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.

And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

I prayed for this boy, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him.

For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

Now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD.' And they worshiped the LORD there.

Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
