This means it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.

  • Rom 4:11-16 : 11 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness might also be credited to them, 12 and to be the father of the circumcised who are not only circumcised but also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised. 13 For the promise to Abraham or his descendants that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the law inherit, faith is made void, and the promise is nullified. 15 For the law brings wrath, and where there is no law, there is no transgression. 16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, that it may be according to grace, so that it might be guaranteed to all the offspring—not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who share the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

  • Gal 4:22-31 : 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and one by the free woman. 23 But the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, while the son by the free woman was born through the promise. 24 Now these things may be interpreted allegorically: These women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery—this is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written: 'Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! For the children of the desolate one will be more than those of the one who has a husband.' 28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as the one born according to the flesh persecuted the one born through the Spirit, so it is also now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? 'Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.' 31 So then, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
