King Solomon loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter—Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women.

These were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, 'You must not intermarry with them, and they must not intermarry with you, for they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.' Nevertheless, Solomon clung to them in love.

3 Han hadde syv hundre koner som var prinsesser, og tre hundre medhustruer. Hans koner ledet hans hjerte på avveie.

He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.

4 Da Salomo ble gammel, vendte hans koner hans hjerte bort til andre guder, og hans hjerte var ikke lenger helt med Herren hans Gud, slik som hans far Davids hjerte hadde vært.

As Solomon grew older, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God as the heart of David his father had been.

Solomon followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.

So Solomon did evil in the eyes of the LORD; he did not fully follow the LORD as David his father had done.

At that time Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, on the hill east of Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the Ammonites.

He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.

The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.

Although He commanded Solomon not to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the LORD's command.

So the LORD said to Solomon, 'Since this is your attitude and you have not kept My covenant and decrees, which I commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.'

12 ‘Likevel skal jeg ikke gjøre det i dine dager for din far Davids skyld, men jeg vil rive det fra din sønn.’

'Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son.'

13 ‘Jeg vil imidlertid ikke rive hele riket bort. Én stamme vil jeg gi din sønn for min tjener Davids skyld og for Jerusalems skyld, den byen jeg har utvalgt.’

'However, I will not tear away the entire kingdom. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of David My servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.'

14 Herren reiste opp en motstander mot Salomo, edomitten Hadad, som var av kongeætten i Edom.

Then the LORD raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom.

15 Da David var i Edom, og hærføreren Joab dro opp for å begrave de falne, slo han alle hannkjønn i Edom.

When David was in Edom and Joab, the commander of the army, went up to bury the dead, they killed every male in Edom.

Joab and all Israel remained there for six months until every male in Edom had been destroyed.

17 Men Hadad flyktet til Egypt sammen med noen edomittiske menn som hadde vært i hans fars tjeneste. Hadad var da en ung gutt.

But Hadad fled to Egypt with some Edomites, who were servants of his father. At the time, he was still a young boy.

They set out from Midian and went to Paran. Taking men from Paran with them, they entered Egypt and went to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, who gave him a house, food, and land.

19 Hadad fikk stor gunst hos farao, som gav ham til ekte sin kones søster, søsteren til dronning Tachpenes.

Hadad found great favor with Pharaoh, who gave him a wife—the sister of his own wife, the queen Tahpenes.

Tahpenes' sister bore Hadad a son named Genubath, whom Tahpenes raised in Pharaoh’s palace among Pharaoh’s own children.

While in Egypt, Hadad heard that David had died and that Joab, the commander of the army, was dead as well. So Hadad said to Pharaoh, 'Let me go, so I may return to my own country.'

Pharaoh asked him, 'What are you lacking here with me that you want to go back to your land?' But Hadad replied, 'Nothing, but please let me go.'

God raised up another adversary against Solomon—Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master Hadadezer, the king of Zobah.

24 Han samlet menn rundt seg og ble leder for en røverband etter å ha flyktet da David slo ned hæren. De dro til Damaskus, bosatte seg der og gjorde Rezon til konge i Damaskus.

Gathering men around him, he became the leader of a band of raiders after David defeated Zobah's forces. They went to Damascus, lived there, and established a kingdom in Damascus.

Rezon was Israel's adversary as long as Solomon lived, causing trouble along with Hadad. He ruled over Aram and loathed Israel.

Then Jeroboam son of Nebat, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, whose mother, a widow named Zeruah, was one of Solomon’s officials, rebelled against the king.

This is the reason Jeroboam raised his hand against the king: Solomon had built the Millo and repaired the breach of the city of David, his father.

Jeroboam was a capable man, and when Solomon saw how well the young man did his work, he appointed him over all the forced labor of the house of Joseph.

It happened at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the road. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak, and the two of them were alone in the field.

Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve pieces.

31 og sa til Jeroboam: ‘Ta ti av stykkene, for så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Se, jeg river riket fra Salomo og gir deg ti stammer.’

Then he said to Jeroboam, 'Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Behold, I am about to tear the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes.'

32 ‘Men én stamme skal han ha for min tjener Davids skyld og for Jerusalems skyld, den byen jeg har utvalgt blant alle Israels stammer.’

'But one tribe will remain for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.'

33 ‘Dette skjer fordi de har forlatt meg, tilbedt Astarte, sidonernes gudinne, Kamos, moabittenes gud, og Milkom, ammonittenes gud. De har ikke vandret på mine veier, gjort det som er rett i mine øyne, eller holdt mine forskrifter og lover, slik som Davids, hans far, gjorde.’

'For they have forsaken Me and worshiped Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh, the god of Moab, and Milcom, the god of the Ammonites. They have not walked in My ways, done what is right in My sight, or kept My statutes and judgments as David, his father, did.'

34 ‘Men jeg vil ikke ta hele riket fra ham. For Davids, min tjeners skyld, som jeg utvalgte, og som holdt mine bud og lover, vil jeg la ham være hersker så lenge han lever.’

'However, I will not take the whole kingdom from him but will allow him to remain ruler all his life for the sake of my servant David, whom I chose and who kept My commands and statutes.'

35 ‘Men jeg vil ta riket fra hans sønn og gi deg ti stammer.’

'I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand and give you ten tribes.'

36 ‘Hans sønn vil jeg gi én stamme, slik at min tjener David alltid kan ha en lysestake foran meg i Jerusalem, den byen jeg har utvalgt for å sette mitt navn der.’

'But to his son, I will give one tribe, so that My servant David may always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen for Myself to put My name there.'

37 ‘Jeg vil ta deg, og du skal herske over alt ditt hjerte begjærer. Du skal være konge over Israel.’

I will take you, and you will reign over all that your heart desires, and you will be king over Israel.

38 ‘Hvis du lytter til alt jeg befaler deg, vandrer på mine veier, gjør det som er rett i mine øyne, holder mine forskrifter og bud, slik min tjener David gjorde, da skal jeg være med deg. Jeg vil bygge deg et varig hus, slik jeg gjorde for David, og jeg vil gi deg Israel.’

If you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, doing what is right in My eyes by keeping My statutes and commands, as My servant David did, then I will be with you. I will build you a sure house, as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.

39 ‘Jeg vil ydmyke Davids ætt for dette, men ikke for alltid.’

I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.

40 Salomo ville drepe Jeroboam, men Jeroboam reiste til Egypt og søkte tilflukt hos kong Sjisjak av Egypt. Han ble der til Salomo døde.

Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to Shishak, king of Egypt. He stayed in Egypt until Solomon died.

As for the rest of the acts of Solomon—all that he did and his wisdom—are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?

42 Den tid Salomo regjerte i Jerusalem over hele Israel, var førti år.

Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years.

43 Så la Salomo seg til hvile med sine fedre og ble gravlagt i Davids by, hans far. Rehabeam, hans sønn, ble konge etter ham.

Then Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David, his father. And Rehoboam, his son, reigned in his place.
