1 Rehabeam dro til Sikem, for hele Israel hadde kommet til Sikem for å gjøre ham til konge.

Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all of Israel had come to Shechem to crown him king.

2 Da Jeroboam, Nebats sønn, som ennå var i Egypten, hvor han hadde rømt fra kong Salomo, hørte dette, vendte han tilbake fra Egypten.

When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about this—he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon—he remained in Egypt.

3 De sendte bud etter ham, og Jeroboam og hele Israels forsamling kom og talte til Rehabeam, hvor de sa:

They sent for him, and Jeroboam and the entire assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam.

4 Din far gjorde vårt åk tungt. Løsne nå det harde arbeidet og det tunge åket som din far la på oss, så vil vi tjene deg.

They said to him, "Your father made our yoke heavy. Now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he placed on us, and we will serve you."

5 Han svarte dem: Gå bort og kom tilbake til meg om tre dager. Da gikk folket bort.

Rehoboam replied, "Come back to me in three days," so the people departed.

6 Kongen Rehabeam rådførte seg med de gamle menn som hadde stått i tjeneste hos hans far Salomo mens han levde. Han sa: Hvordan vil dere råde meg til å svare dette folket?

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon while he was alive. He asked, "How do you advise me to answer these people?"

7 De talte til ham og sa: Hvis du i dag vil tjene dette folket og gi dem gode ord, så vil de tjene deg for alltid.

They replied, "If you will serve these people today and grant their request, speaking kind words to them, they will always be your servants."

8 Men han forkastet de gamles råd som de hadde gitt ham, og rådførte seg med de unge mennene som hadde vokst opp sammen med ham og sto i hans tjeneste.

But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders who had counseled him and instead consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

9 Han spurte dem: Hva råder dere oss til å svare dette folket som sa til oss: Løsne åket som din far la på oss?

He asked them, "What is your advice? How should we reply to these people who have said to me, 'Lighten the yoke your father has put on us'?"

10 De unge mennene som hadde vokst opp sammen med ham, svarte: Slik skal du si til dette folket som sa til deg: Din far gjorde vårt åk tungt, men løsne det for oss – slik skal du si til dem: Min lillefinger er tykkere enn min fars midje!

The young men who had grown up with him replied, "Here is what you should tell these people who have said to you, 'Your father made our yoke heavy; now lighten it for us': Tell them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.

11 Min far la et tungt åk på dere, men jeg vil gjøre deres åk enda tyngre. Min far tukte dere med pisker, men jeg vil tukte dere med skorpioner.

Now, my father laid a heavy yoke on you, but I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips; I will discipline you with scorpions.'"

12 Jeroboam og hele folket kom til Rehabeam på den tredje dagen, slik som kongen hadde sagt: Kom tilbake til meg på den tredje dagen.

Three days later, Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had instructed them, saying, "Come back to me on the third day."

13 Kongen svarte folket hardt, og han forkastet de gamles råd som de hadde gitt ham.

But the king answered the people harshly, rejecting the advice given to him by the elders.

14 Han talte til dem etter de unge mennene råd: Min far gjorde deres åk tungt, men jeg vil gjøre det enda tyngre. Min far tukte dere med pisker, men jeg vil tukte dere med skorpioner.

He said to them, "My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father disciplined you with whips; I will discipline you with scorpions."

15 Kongen hørte ikke på folket; for det var fra Herren at dette kom, for å oppfylle ordet som Herren hadde talt ved Ahia fra Sjilo til Jeroboam, Nebats sønn.

So the king refused to listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the LORD, to fulfill the word spoken by the LORD through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 Da hele Israel så at kongen ikke hørte på dem, svarte de kongen og sa: Hva del har vi i David? Vi har ingen arv i Isais sønn. Til teltene dine, Israel! Se til ditt eget hus, David! Så dro Israel til sine hjem.

When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: "What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse's son? To your tents, Israel! Look after your own house, David!" So the Israelites went home.

17 Men de israelittene som bodde i Judas byer, ble styrt av Rehabeam.

But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.

18 Kongen Rehabeam sendte Adoram, som hadde oppsyn med pliktarbeidet, men hele Israel steinet ham til døde. Kong Rehabeam skyndte seg opp i vognen for å flykte til Jerusalem.

King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam managed to get into his chariot and flee to Jerusalem.

19 Slik gjorde Israel opprør mot Davids hus, og dette vedvarer til denne dag.

So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

20 Da hele Israel hørte at Jeroboam var kommet tilbake, sendte de bud etter ham til forsamlingen og gjorde ham til konge over hele Israel. Ingen fulgte Davids hus unntatt Judas stamme alene.

When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent for him and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.

21 Da Rehabeam kom til Jerusalem, samlet han hele Judas hus og Benjamins stamme, ett hundre og åtti tusen utvalgte krigere, for å kjempe mot Israels hus og vinne kongeriket tilbake til Rehabeam, Salomos sønn.

When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—a total of 180,000 able young men to go to war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.

22 Men Guds ord kom til Sjemaia, Guds mann, og sa:

But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:

23 Si til Rehabeam, Salomos sønn, kongen av Juda, og til hele Judas og Benjamins hus og resten av folket:

"Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,

24 Så sier Herren: Dere skal ikke dra opp og føre krig mot brødrene deres, Israels barn. Vend tilbake til deres hus, for dette har skjedd av meg. Så hørte de på Herrens ord og dro hjem igjen som Herren hadde sagt.

This is what the LORD says: You shall not march up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Return home, for this is my doing." So they obeyed the word of the LORD and went back as the LORD had commanded.

25 Jeroboam bygde opp Sikem i Efraims fjell og bodde der. Deretter dro han ut og bygde Penuel.

Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Penuel.

26 Jeroboam sa i sitt hjerte: Nå kan kongedømmet komme tilbake til Davids hus.

Jeroboam said to himself, "The kingdom will now likely return to the house of David.

27 Hvis dette folket går opp for å ofre i Herrens hus i Jerusalem, vil deres hjerter vende seg til deres herre, Rehabeam, Judas konge. Så vil de drepe meg og vende tilbake til Rehabeam, Judas konge.

If these people go up to worship at the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam of Judah.

28 Da tok kongen råd og laget to gullkalver. Han sa til folket: Det er for mye for dere å dra opp til Jerusalem. Se, her er dine guder, Israel, som førte deg opp fra Egyptens land.

After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.

29 Han stilte den ene opp i Betel og den andre i Dan.

He set up one in Bethel, and the other in Dan.

30 Dette ble en synd, for folket gikk foran den ene helt til Dan.

And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.

31 Han bygde også helligdommer på høydene og gjorde hvem som helst av folket til prester, selv om de ikke var av Levis sønner.

Jeroboam also built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites.

32 Jeroboam innstiftet en høytid i den åttende måneden, på den femtende dagen i måneden, lik høytiden i Juda, og han ofret på alteret. Dette gjorde han i Betel, og han ofret til de kalvene han hadde laget. Han innsatte også prestene for høydehelligdommene han hadde laget.

He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. He did this in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And there at Bethel he installed priests for the high places he had made.

33 På den femtende dagen i den åttende måneden, den måneden han selv hadde tenkt ut, steg han opp på alteret han hadde bygd i Betel. Han innstiftet en høytid for Israels barn og steg opp på alteret for å brenne røkelse.

On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to offer sacrifices.
