Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,

To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at osse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

siden vi hørte om deres tro på Kristus Jesus og den kjærligheten dere har til alle de hellige,

Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which ye have to all the saints,

for det håp som er lagt opp for dere i himmelen, som dere allerede har hørt om gjennom sannhetens ord i evangeliet;

For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;

det som har kommet til dere, akkurat som det er i hele verden, og bærer frukt, slik som også hos dere, siden den dagen dere hørte om det og virkelig forstod Guds nåde.

Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

Slik dere også lærte det av Epafras, vår kjære medtjener, som er en trofast Kristi tjener for dere,

As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;

og som har gjort oss kjent med deres kjærlighet i Ånden.

Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.

Og av denne grunn, fra den dagen vi hørte det, har vi ikke sluttet å be for dere, og be om at dere må bli fylt med kunnskapen om hans vilje i all visdom og åndelig forståelse,

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

slik at dere kan vandre verdig for Herren til det som behager ham i alle ting, bære frukt i enhver god gjerning og vokse i kunnskapen om Gud;

That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

styrket med all kraft, etter hans herlige makt, til all utholdenhet og tålmodighet med glede,

Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

idét vi gir takksigelse til Faderen, som har gjort oss i stand til å ha del i de helliges arv i lyset.

Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

Han har fridd oss fra mørkets makt og overført oss til riket til sin elskede Sønn,

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

i hvem vi har forløsning gjennom hans blod, syndenes tilgivelse.

In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

Han er bildet av den usynlige Gud, den førstefødte over all skapning.

Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

For i ham ble alle ting skapt, de som er i himmelen og de som er på jorden, synlige og usynlige, troner eller herredømmer, makter eller myndigheter; alle ting er skapt ved ham og for ham.

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Han er før alle ting, og i ham eksisterer alle ting.

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Han er hodet for legemet, kirken; han er begynnelsen, den førstefødte fra de døde, for at han skal ha forrang i alt.

And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

For det var Guds velbehag at all fylde skulle bo i ham,

For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

og ved ham har Gud forsonet alle ting med seg selv, ved å gjøre fred gjennom hans korsblod, enten de er på jorden eller i himmelen.

And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.

Og dere, som tidligere var fremmede og fiender i deres sinn på grunn av onde gjerninger, har han nå forsonet,

And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled

i sitt kjødelige legeme gjennom døden, for å fremstille dere hellige, ulastelige og uankelege for hans åsyn,

In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

dersom dere fortsetter i troen, grunnfestet og faste, og ikke viker bort fra håpet i evangeliet som dere har hørt, og som har blitt forkynt for hver skapning under himmelens hvelving; det evangelium som jeg Paulus er gjort til tjener for.

If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Nå gleder jeg meg over det jeg lider for dere, og supplerer det som mangler av Kristi lidelser i mitt legeme, for hans kropps skyld, som er kirken,

Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

som jeg er blitt tjener for, i henhold til Guds vilje som ble gitt meg for dere, for å oppfylle Guds ord,

Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God;

mysteriet som har vært skjult fra tider og generasjoner, men nå er åpenbart for hans hellige;

Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:

for dem ville Gud gjøre kjent hvor rik herlighetens håp er i dette mysteriet blant hedningene, som er Kristus i dere, håpet om herlighet.

To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Ham forkynner vi, ved å advare hvert menneske, og ved å undervise hvert menneske i all visdom, for at vi kan fremstille hvert menneske fullkomment i Kristus Jesus.

Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

For dette arbeider jeg, i kamp, ved hans kraft som arbeider sterkt i meg.

Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
